Peacemaker Season 2 is actively adapting its storyline to fit within the broader context of the DC Universe, a process initiated by re-editing its Season 1 recap to align with the new continuity. This transformation has solidified characters such as the 11th Street Kids, John Cena’s (Christopher Smith) unconventional found family, as part of official lore, while also incorporating figures from the wider DC Universe. The second season is broadening this universe by introducing a variety of peculiar new DCU characters, thus creating a realm that already houses deities and monsters. However, for the most part, the series maintains its focus on espionage, government intrigue, and costumed heroes who rely more on determination and gadgets than innate powers. Yet, the recent episode deviates from this pattern, uncovering that an unexpected fresh character exhibits metahuman abilities.
Warning: Spoilers below for Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 4
Towards the end of Episode 3 from Season 2 of Peacemaker, we were introduced to Red St. Wild (played by Michael Rooker), an internationally recognized eagle hunter hired by ARGUS with the task of eliminating Eagly, Peacemaker’s cherished bird companion. The following Episode 4 provides a substantial focus on fleshing out this new adversary, exploring his warped perspective and solidifying him as a formidable danger to Peacemaker’s feathered friend. Initially portrayed as the irrational fantasies of a mentally unstable person, the episode’s finale presents an unsettling twist, verifying that Red St. Wild possesses genuine superhuman abilities.
What Are the Powers of Red St. Wild in Peacemaker?
The fourth installment immerses viewers into a confrontation between ARGUS and Peacemaker’s home, during which John Economos (played by Steve Agee) teams up with Red St. Wild. Their objective to track down Eagly serves as a backdrop for Gunn to expose the disturbing psyche of the new character. Red St. Wild, who dresses in culturally insensitive Native American attire, considers eagles as vermin that need elimination for the nation’s benefit. His campaign centers around his belief that he needs to kill a “Primal Eagle” from a fabricated Native American prophecy, which he uses to rationalize his dark tendencies. In his mind, this action will spiritually purify the United States of the historical wrongs inflicted upon its indigenous population. This delusional and offensive ideology earns him the fitting nickname “Captain Cultural Appropriation” from a dismayed Economos.
During their pursuit of Eagly, the relationship between the two men reaches a pivotal moment. As Red St. Wild was about to take a decisive shot, Economos suddenly pushes him, protecting the bird instead. This unexpected action causes Red St. Wild to tumble and hit his head on a rock. In a quick move to save himself, Economos invents a tale about a second eagle, an extraordinary occurrence for this solitary species. Amazingly, instead of seeing through the obvious deception, Red St. Wild accepts it as a powerful sign. He becomes completely convinced that this incident proves Eagly is the prophesied Primal Eagle he is fated to slay.
In this rephrased version, I’ve aimed to maintain the original narrative while making it more accessible:
Red St. Wild, now certain beyond doubt, secludes himself in the forest to conduct a ritual. Under the cover of darkness, he dances around a fire, only partly clothed, using blood trickling from his forehead wound to sketch an eagle on the ground. His actions seem more like a dramatic performance, suggesting he’s immersed in a dangerous daydream. However, the perception changes dramatically when the fire suddenly blazes a bright blue, swallowing Red St. Wild entirely. In the flames, an image of an eagle materializes, and at that very moment, Red St. Wild acquires supernatural insights about the bird’s precise location. The story unfolds from Red St. Wild’s perspective as his spirit soars through the skies, chasing its quarry and witnessing the eagle taking shelter in Peacemaker’s Settler’s Hill cabin.
In the latest installment, it’s unclear if Red St. Wild’s divination is a natural talent awakened by the ritual or a power bestowed upon him by it. Regardless, both scenarios underscore his role as a metahuman, adding an ominous and volatile magical factor to the unfolding seasonal struggle. With ARGUS hot on Peacemaker’s heels, the confrontation between Red St. Wild and Eagly is expected to intensify in future episodes, potentially shedding light on the antagonists’ supernatural abilities.
New episodes of Peacemaker premiere on HBO Max on Thursdays.
