Following the blockbuster performance of this summer’s Superman, the next installment in the DC Universe is soon to be released, namely Peacemaker Season 2, set to debut on HBO Max on August 21st. It seems that James Gunn and his team have another hit up their sleeves. The initial reviews for Peacemaker Season 2 are out, and critics can’t get enough of it. Currently, Peacemaker’s second season holds a remarkable 100% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 30 reviews in, making it the third straight Certified Fresh project in the DCU since the new continuity began late last year with Creature Commandos.
The animated series boasts a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 95%. To date, Superman holds the lowest critic score among DC Universe productions at 83%. If we look back to the old DC Extended Universe, Peacemaker‘s first season received a rating of 93% and The Suicide Squad earned 90%. As for Peacemaker Season 2, no consensus has been published, but by glancing through the reviews, it appears that the cast’s performances, its exaggerated R-rated humor and violence, and a more profound emotional core are being highly praised.
Gunn refers to Season 2 of “Peacemaker” as a “direct continuation” of the storyline from “Superman.” Despite having distinctly different styles and moods, both productions share numerous ties. Characters originally introduced in “Superman” make appearances in “Peacemaker.” In fact, these shared elements prompted an early release of “Superman” on home media platforms, allowing viewers to catch up before the premiere of “Peacemaker.” Gunn aimed to allow audiences to watch the former movie prior to the latter’s return.
HBO Max is working hard to launch an impressive marketing effort for the second season of Peacemaker. This year at San Diego Comic-Con, a panel was held in Hall H where a trailer for the upcoming season was unveiled. The preview introduced the concept that the new season will explore, featuring Christopher Smith stumbling upon a different reality in which his life appears ideal. The introduction of the multiverse concept adds an intriguing twist to the show, originally based within the DCEU, and brings it into the wider DC Universe. In anticipation of Season 2’s premiere, James Gunn has been hosting a rewatch of Season 1 on the official Peacemaker podcast, clarifying what aspects of the series are considered canon within the DC Universe.
The first season of “Peacemaker” in the DC Extended Universe received broad acclaim, and it’s fantastic that the second season is also receiving positive feedback. The DC Universe now has another success story under its belt as things gain momentum, impressing critics and viewers with tales that are both entertaining and emotionally resonant. After going through a mix of highs and lows in the 2010s, it was crucial for DC Studios to launch the DCU on a strong note, and they’ve managed to do just that. The response to “Peacemaker” Season 2 will only serve to further propel the franchise forward, fueling anticipation for what lies ahead.
Among the standout observations in reviews for Peacemaker Season 2 is that many critics have praised the show’s deeply moving narrative. Throughout his career, Gunn has demonstrated an exceptional ability to intertwine humor with emotion. The Guardians of the Galaxy films elicit uproarious laughter one moment and profound tears the next. Given this background, it’s no surprise that Peacemaker Season 2 manages to evoke empathy for its characters through an emotionally intense narrative centered around finding a sense of belonging. However, it’s refreshing to see that there is more to the show than just adult humor, hinting that Peacemaker Season 2 may even surpass its predecessor in quality.
