Peacemaker Season 2’s Ending Explained (How It Sets Up the Future of the DCU)

Everything has been building up to this moment. Even though many shows now release all episodes at once, James Gunn has stayed true to his plan and released *Peacemaker* Season 2 one episode a week. This has allowed fans online to create lots of theories about what’s happening on Earth-2 and if a war across different universes is about to begin, especially after Peacemaker’s actions with his alternate self. But not all of these guesses are correct, and it’s become clear recently that Gunn has a precise idea of where he’s taking his DC Universe show.

The next-to-last episode of *Peacemaker* season two feels like the turning point in a movie, leaving Peacemaker in a seemingly impossible situation while in A.R.G.U.S. custody – potentially for good, if Rick Flag Sr. has his way. But Peacemaker’s friends, the 11th Street Kids, won’t let anything bad happen to him without a fight. The season finale begins with them taking action, and by the end, the DC Universe has been significantly changed.

Peacemaker Finally Gets the Love He’s Been Seeking & a New Career

So, Peacemaker was using this incredible device – the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, which can open doors to other dimensions – as leverage with A.R.G.U.S. Rick Flag Sr. kept saying he’d use it to gather intel, and surprisingly, he actually followed through. In the end, he wanted to find a planet where they could dump all the dangerous metahumans. Even Lex Luthor was part of this plan, and honestly, I thought Peacemaker was going to be one of the first ones sent through that portal. But thankfully, the 11th Street Kids stepped in! They rescued him and really showed him how much he means to them, making it clear they want him in their lives. It was amazing to see them lift his spirits and save him from whatever Flag had planned.

To really emphasize their commitment, John Economos and Emilia Harcourt resign from A.R.G.U.S. and team up with Leota Adebayo, Sasha Bordeaux, Langston Fleury, and Judomaster to build a new organization. They name it “Checkmate,” a name likely to cause some surprise, as it’s historically known in DC Comics as a secret agency connected to Amanda Waller’s Task Force X. With Waller gone, this new group aims to take over Checkmate’s mission, but with a more ethical approach – recruiting troubled individuals with superpowers to help, rather than harm, the world. However, their efforts will be delayed, as a final move by Flag Sr. sets the stage for another major story arc.

DC’s “Salvation” Storyline Is Coming to Live-Action

Just when Peacemaker finds some happiness, things take a turn for the worse. A.R.G.U.S. forces him to go back through the Quantum Unfolding Chambers and return to Salvation. It turns out Flag Sr. wants to use the person who killed his son as a test subject for a new interdimensional prison – he doesn’t want Peacemaker enjoying life while Rick Flag Jr. remains dead. However, Flag Sr. doesn’t realize this idea has been done before in the comics. The ‘Salvation Run’ storyline mirrors the recent ‘Peacemaker’ finale, with A.R.G.U.S. gathering villains and sending them to a faraway planet, where they join familiar faces like Lex Luthor, The Joker, and the Rogues.

The villains soon discover they aren’t the only ones on this planet—it turns out Darkseid’s follower, DeSaad, is using it as a training ground. Hunted by Parademons, they have no choice but to team up and find a way home. Depending on who else Flag Sr. sends through the portal, he might accidentally create a strong alliance that could become a threat to him. While Luthor likely won’t be a concern, given their prior agreement before the events of *Man of Tomorrow*, other intelligent villains could easily step up. And for Peacemaker, a reunion with Keith Smith is a possibility, as the Season 2 finale left that storyline unfinished, saving Keith’s quest for revenge for later.

Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
