In simpler terms, “Peacemaker” Season 2 is unfolding a story across multiple universes, where the central theme revolves around the character Peacemaker, played by John Cena, discovering an alternate universe where his usual tragic life is replaced with fame and happiness. Here, he enjoys a close bond with his father Auggie (Robert Patrick) and brother Keith (David Denman). Initially, this seemingly ideal world seemed a bit too good to be true in the first two episodes of Season 2. However, by Episode 3, it becomes evident what the twist is – and it’s a bit surprising that we didn’t catch on earlier!
WARNING: Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 3 SPOILERS Follow!
A New Rick in Town”
In this story, Chris ventures to another dimension to reunite with Jennifer Holland’s character, alt-Harcourt. However, he discovers that she is now romantically involved with Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman. The two spend an enjoyable afternoon together, hinting at a potential rekindling of their past relationship. Their tranquility is disrupted when the “Sons of Liberty” terrorist group strikes a nearby government building, attempting to set off an explosion. Peacemaker takes matters into his own hands, rescues the hostages, eliminates the terrorists, and successfully defuses the bomb. This act earns him admiration from the public and Harcourt, who notices a remarkable transformation in Smith.
What Are Peacemaker’s “Sons of Liberty” Fighting Against?
In the fast-paced Episode 4 of Peacemaker, viewers might not have time to ponder over the question you’ve asked. Just like the old saying, ‘One person’s terrorist is another person’s freedom fighter,’ the name “Sons of Liberty” leaves little doubt about the political standpoint of this group. However, it’s worth considering what they could potentially be opposing.
James Gunn skillfully guides us through a broader exploration of an alternate universe in “Peacemaker” Season 2 Episode 3, subtly camouflaging the obvious discrepancy that has been apparent all along – the entire population of this world appears to be made up of people with Caucasian ethnicity.
In Episode 3, the most significant hints come from Peacemaker’s trip to an alternate ARGUS headquarters and his unexpected outing with Harcourt. Creatively, the writer employs two concurrent narratives – one centered on “A” and another on “B” – to present two contrasting depictions of ARGUS within the same episode: the primary universe’s ARGUS boasts a diverse cast including Tim Meadows as Langston Fleury, Danielle Brooks as Adebayo, and Sol Rodriguez as Sasha Bordeaux. In stark contrast, the alternate universe’s ARGUS office is exclusively white. This disparity is noticeable not only in the ARGUS headquarters but also during Peacemaker’s ride to ARGUS HQ, and later at the town square where he goes on his date with Harcourt – no people of color are present there.
Peacemaker Season 2’s Alternate Universe Twist Is Perfection
In this world, The Smith Family – Chris, Keith, and Auggie – are celebrated as exceptional heroes due to their collective power being instrumental in helping the Red (or more accurately “Blue”) Dragon impose his Aryan ideology on the universe. Additionally, it’s implied that the Chris Smith of this realm was plagued by deep self-hatred, much like the main universe’s Peacemaker, as suggested by various signs of internal struggles such as substance abuse issues.
In contrast to other franchises who have diluted multi-universe narratives with shallow fan service, Gunn cleverly employs this concept, establishing significant challenges for the upcoming Season 2 of Peacemaker.
- The emotional hit of Chris learning that he and his family are still rotten in any world.
- The psychological hit of Chris having to reconcile his attraction to a world his dad conquered, and what it says about him.
- The physical and emotional hits to come from the inevitable falling out with Keith and Auggie over killing their version of Chris.
- The existential hit of knowing his variant self died before ever getting himself or his life right, which could end up being the biggest motivator for main universe Chris to change.
Is This the DCU Earth-X?
In simpler terms, the fictional universe known as “Earth-X” or “Earth-10” (in DC’s multiverse) depicts an alternate reality where the Axis powers won World War II and established a global Nazi regime. This world features twisted versions of familiar superheroes, like “Overman,” a Nazi-raised counterpart to Superman, who forms a villainous version of the Justice League called JLAxis. Could a similar concept be developed with David Corenswet playing a variant of such an “evil Superman”? Absolutely!
The world of Peacemaker, labeled as Earth-X, has a rich history. It’s unclear if this history will be fully explored or merely used as a foundation by James Gunn for this series. There’s potential for the multidimensional exploits of future seasons of Peacemaker to lead to a conflict with Earth-X retaliating on our universe, similar to what happened in the Arrowverse. This could provide an opportunity for humor, as it would be characteristic of James Gunn’s style to have Peacemaker instigate a cross-dimensional war, a concept that might seem comical.
Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
