Peacemaker’s Steve Agee Reveals Season 1 Moment That’s Definitely Still Canon

The debut of the new DC Universe has left a challenging canonical dilemma for ongoing projects, and few find themselves in a more peculiar situation than “Peacemaker.” Although its second season will be part of James Gunn’s fresh canon, the first season occupies a “soft canon” area. Despite the timeline adjustment, Gunn plans to reintroduce all the primary characters from the 11th Street Kids, including John Economos (Steve Agee), whose position in the new DCU was previously confirmed by his role in the animated series “Creature Commandos.” In this universe, John served as both the tech support and beard-dye expert for the team. However, he also demonstrated his prowess in numerous battles, including slaying a rampaging gorilla with a chainsaw – an accomplishment that ComicBook recently discussed with Steve Agee at Comic-Con, where he shared his thoughts on the canonicity of this remarkable achievement.

In a new podcast, we’re revisiting Season 1 and discussing what is considered canonical versus non-canonical. Agee mentioned that he hadn’t considered the gorilla before, but he’s going to go along with the idea that he still has some of its blood on him. He believes he has the least number of casualties among all characters in the show, so he wants to maintain this as much as possible.

In an interesting twist, Agee revealed that they filmed Season 1 scenes out of sequence. This included a hospital scene with props featuring a newspaper about a gorilla’s death. It wasn’t until they shot the episode where he killed the gorilla character that it clicked for him – “Oh my goodness, I was the one who had killed that gorilla in real life on the news!

Beyond establishing the gorilla killing incident as an accepted event, Agee also revealed that his character’s interaction with Christopher Smith (portrayed by John Cena) will have developed since their previous meeting. The first season concluded with the team being divided yet united by shared trauma, and this dynamic seems to persist into the next season. In a playful hint, he suggested, “I believe in Season 2, Peacemaker and I have a more amicable relationship.” However, he cautioned not to reveal too much, but rest assured, their bond has certainly improved.

Everything We Know About Peacemaker Season 2

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the next chapter of “Peacemaker” unfolds a few years after the tumultuous events of Project Butterfly. This time gap provides an intriguing canvas for the DCU world to adapt and respond to Leota Adebayo’s (Danielle Brooks) brave revelation of Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) covert activities. Strategically, this series now aligns with the timeline already set in “Creature Commandos” and the recently premiered “Superman,” adding depth and connectivity to the DC Universe as a whole.

In addition to Cena and Agee, the second season of Peacemaker will feature Brooks as Adebayo, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Freddie Stroma as the popular character Vigilante, and Nhut Le returning as Judomaster. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that Robert Patrick will reprise his role as Auggie Smith, Peacemaker’s abusive and deceased father, but in a unique twist, this season explores a multiverse plotline that allows for the return of an alternate version of Auggie dressed in a blue White Dragon suit. This parallel universe also presents a living version of Peacemaker’s brother, who fights alongside Auggie and an alternative reality Peacemaker.

Gathering all the actors, Frank Grillo takes on the part of Rick Flag Sr., the senior of the soldier who was killed in “The Suicide Squad.” As the current leader of ARGUS, Flag Sr. seeks revenge against Christopher Smith with unrelenting determination, setting up a gritty and intense confrontation. The ensemble is strengthened by the inclusion of Tim Meadows, David Denman, and Sol Rodriguez in undisclosed roles. The series maintains its signature mix of raw action, offbeat humor, and poignant emotional layers as it establishes itself within the DC Universe.

Peacemaker Season 2 will debut on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
