2025 was a notable year for horror films, including titles like Sinners, Weapons, and 28 Years Later. However, movies that genuinely frightened audiences in theaters didn’t always receive positive reviews from critics. Now, a 2025 horror film with a remarkably large gap between its critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes has become available on Peacock, and it has the potential to become a beloved cult classic.
I was so excited to finally stream Five Nights at Freddy’s 2! It just became available on NBCUniversal on April 3rd, after being in theaters back in December 2025. As a fan of the first movie – which was based on Scott Cawthon’s popular video game about haunted, killer robots at an old arcade – I was really curious to see the sequel. It’s interesting because this movie actually had a bigger difference between what critics thought and what audiences thought than any other film on the site! When it first came out, critics gave it a really low score – only 13% on the Tomatometer – but audiences loved it, giving it 88% on the Popcornmeter. The scores have changed a little since then, it’s now at 16% for critics and 83% for audiences, but it’s still a huge gap!
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Divided Critics and Audiences
The movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 sharply divided critics and audiences. While reviewers like Mark Kennedy of The Associated Press called it a “disorganized disaster” and Discussing Film’s Tyler Taing labeled it a purely commercial venture, general audiences enthusiastically praised it as “better than the first” and “surprisingly good.” Critics found the sequel lacking in scares, with weak acting and a confusing story that leaned too much on established fan lore. However, audiences appreciated the increased focus on lore and its greater faithfulness to the video games. This focus on pleasing fans, despite negative reviews, suggests the movie could become a beloved cult classic and is likely to attract horror fans of all ages.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie was a huge success with audiences. It received higher ratings than other well-regarded 2025 horror films like The Conjuring: Last Rites and Good Boy, and it performed exceptionally well in theaters. While it didn’t quite match the original’s impressive $130 million opening weekend, it still brought in $110 million worldwide ($64 million domestically and $46 million internationally). This resulted in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 achieving several records, including the biggest opening weekend after Thanksgiving, the largest December horror opening, and the biggest PG-13 horror opening of 2025, solidifying the franchise’s continued success in cinemas.
What’s New on Peacock?
I’m really excited about what’s new on Prime Video this month! April is already off to a fantastic start with tons of great movies being added, like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Dead Poets Society, and Interstellar. And it’s not stopping there – I’m especially looking forward to watching Nosferatu when it arrives on April 21st, and I’m definitely planning a movie night for the original Five Nights At Freddy’s on April 26th!
