The 2020s are proving to be a golden age for animation, with a surge of creatively told stories resulting in fantastic movies. So far, 2024 has been an especially strong year, bringing both popular blockbusters and critically praised films that people are still talking about. In fact, the year’s best animated movie is now available to stream on Peacock, and fans won’t have to wait long for the next installment, as a sequel has already been announced.
The animated film The Wild Robot, from DreamWorks, is now streaming on Peacock after previously being available on Netflix. Directed by Chris Sanders and adapted from Peter Brown’s 2016 novel, the movie tells the story of a robot who crashes on a deserted island. She survives by learning to live in the wilderness and forms friendships with the animals, eventually raising an orphaned gosling named Brightbill. Released in 2024, The Wild Robot – featuring Catherine O’Hara in her final role – was both a critical and commercial hit. A sequel, based on Brown’s book The Wild Robot Escapes, is already planned.
The Wild Robot Is DreamWorks’s Best Movie in Over a Decade
DreamWorks Animation has consistently delivered excellent films like The Bad Guys, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, solidifying its position as a leader in animation. However, The Wild Robot stands out as their best film yet. With a remarkable 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 98% audience rating, it’s DreamWorks’ second highest-rated movie of all time and the best they’ve made since 2010’s How to Train Your Dragon. The Associated Press’ Mark Kennedy even called it “an absolute movie triumph,” highlighting its groundbreaking quality and marking it as a true masterpiece for the studio.
The Wild Robot is a beautiful and touching animated sci-fi film that feels like a future classic. Unlike many DreamWorks movies known for their jokes and references, this one tells a surprisingly thoughtful and emotional story about family, loss, and finding connection. It’s a truly exceptional film, with a heartwarming story and stunning, hand-drawn animation – described by Sanders as looking like a ‘moving painting.’ The character of Roz is particularly well-developed, as she learns to feel and forms a strong bond with Brightbill, going beyond her original robotic programming.
What’s New on Peacock?
Peacock added The Wild Robot to its streaming library in March, completing most of its new releases for the month. It joined a large group of other recent additions, including family favorites like Little Rascals, the Madagascar films, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Other titles recently added to Peacock include The Big Lebowski, Death Becomes Her, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, John Wick: Chapter 4, the Leprechaun movies, and Schindler’s List.
