Despite debuting relatively recently in 2020 on the TV streaming scene, Peacock boasts an abundant collection of captivating movies and series to keep you hooked. The original content on this platform spans various genres, making it all the more appealing as it’s the streaming service for NBCUniversal. This means that popular shows such as The Office are available here, with the addition of the upcoming spinoff series The Paper soon joining the roster. More recently, Peacock has added a timeless anthology series to its library, and given that one of the greatest directors in history is attached to the project, it’s certainly worth giving it a try.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, let me tell you that the series I’m referring to is none other than “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” a chilling anthology show masterminded by the legendary horror maestro himself. This series was aired from 1955 to 1962, right in the heart of Hitchcock’s reign as the terror king, with films like “Psycho,” “Vertigo,” and “North by Northwest” sending shivers down our spines and redefining the horror genre.
Each episode presented a different tale of fear, dread, and tension, with a fresh cast of characters and authors each time. However, Hitchcock added a sense of continuity to the series by hosting it himself, providing a familiar and eerie touch to each story.
In Alfred Hitchcock’s timeless opening sequence of ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’, the acclaimed filmmaker appears as a silhouette within a drawing of his own profile, setting the stage for each episode. For approximately a minute or so, Hitchcock would address the camera directly, delivering a playful and self-aware monologue that foreshadowed the suspenseful tales to follow. Known primarily for his cinematic prowess, Hitchcock’s dry humor shines brightly, even in black and white, making ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ an undisputed television gem.
In the ’80s, some of the most striking episodes from Alfred Hitchcock Presents were re-created, featuring colorized versions of Hitchcock’s opening monologues. Despite this revival, the original series still stands strong, particularly for those who appreciate horror and Hitchcock’s style. Now, all seven seasons of Alfred Hitchcock Presents can be streamed on Peacock, making it an ideal compact offering of horror entertainment, with each episode lasting less than 30 minutes.
