One of Peacock’s most popular original shows is coming to an end. Since launching in April 2020, Peacock has become a strong competitor in streaming, offering impressive original series like Poker Face, Twisted Metal, and The Paper, a spin-off of The Office. Now, the streamer is removing titles from its November schedule, and one of its best shows has just released its final season.
The fourth and final season of Bel-Air began streaming on Peacock on November 24th. The first three episodes are available now, with two more coming on December 1st and the last three on December 8th. This series, which started in 2022, is a fresh take on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, starring Jabari Banks as Will, a teenager from West Philadelphia who moves in with his relatives in Bel-Air.
Bel-Air Is One of Peacock’s Best Shows
Following the huge success of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 90s, Bel-Air faced high expectations, but it avoided the typical pitfalls of reboots. Instead of simply recreating the original, the series used the basic idea as a starting point for a fresh take on the story. This allowed it to connect with both longtime fans and new viewers. By changing the format from a 30-minute comedy to a 60-minute drama, Bel-Air was able to develop the original show’s dramatic moments into full storylines and explore important modern issues like race, class, and identity with depth and complexity.
Peacock has seen huge success with Bel-Air. Since its debut in 2022, the show quickly became the platform’s most popular original series, attracting eight million viewers in just weeks. Peacock reported that Bel-Air broke records for new subscriptions, overall usage, and account upgrades. The show has continued to build a dedicated fanbase and has also been well-received by critics. Currently, Bel-Air boasts an 85% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, which has improved with each season – with Season 3 achieving a perfect 100% rating.
Why Is Bel-Air Ending With Season 4?
Peacock has confirmed that Bel-Air will return for a fourth and final season in December 2024, not long after Season 3 finished airing. While the streaming service didn’t explain why it’s ending the show before reaching the original series’ six seasons, Deadline reported that budget discussions happened before the renewal, potentially contributing to the shorter length of the final season. The first three seasons each had 10 episodes, but Season 4 will only have eight. However, showrunner Carla Banks-Waddles suggested to The Wrap that this is a fitting conclusion, saying the four-year story feels complete and it’s “time to graduate.”
