Simu Liu’s new TV show is a hit! It quickly became the most-watched show on Peacock, reaching the number one spot just three days after its release, according to data from FlixPatrol.
Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera star in The Copenhagen Test, a spy thriller about Alexander Hale, a Chinese-American analyst working for a secret agency called The Orphanage. When Alexander suspects he’s being framed as a mole – and discovers someone has hacked his senses – he pretends everything is normal while secretly helping to find the real culprit. As the agency closes in, they create an elaborate false reality for him, complete with a fake promotion, a staged relationship, and a dangerous mission that blurs the line between what’s real and what’s paranoia.
It’s A Fun, Reality-Bending Thriller
So far, audiences seem to be enjoying The Copenhagen Test more than critics. It currently has an 80% audience score and a 71% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and those numbers are likely to improve with time. Martin Carr from CBR praised the show’s twists and turns, saying it consistently meets expectations as the story unfolds. However, Aramide Tinubu of Variety felt the show had potential but was bogged down by a needlessly complex plot and too many characters, ultimately leading to a disappointing result.
Viewers generally enjoyed the show, with many finding it a fun and engaging watch. One person shared that it offered a fascinating look into the Asian American experience, particularly through the portrayal of Alexander and the reactions he received. They also praised the performances of veteran actors like Adina Porter, Brian Darcy, and Kathleen C., and were especially impressed by Melissa Barrera’s complex and captivating character, as well as her chemistry with Simu. Others highlighted the strong performances of Sinclair, Daniel, and Mark, making the show a thoroughly enjoyable binge-watch. Another viewer described it as a thrilling and unpredictable holiday series and expressed interest in a potential second season.
Overall, The Copenhagen Test is a well-made spy thriller and definitely worth watching on Peacock.
