The show centers on Charlie, a woman forced to wander the country after she helps solve a crime and catches the attention of a dangerous casino owner who wants her silenced.

Charlie has an incredible ability: she can instantly tell when someone is lying. Unlike most murder mystery shows, which focus on figuring out who committed the crime, the TV series Poker Face flips the script. Instead of a ‘whodunit,’ it’s a ‘howcatchem’ – meaning we see how the criminal will be caught.

Each episode of Poker Face starts by showing you both the killer and the victim. Then, the show follows Charlie as she figures out how the crime unfolded. While knowing the ‘who’ upfront might sound like it would ruin the mystery, it doesn’t. The first season of Poker Face was a hit with critics, earning a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show continued its success with season 2 in 2025, maintaining a very high 96% score.

Lyonne’s show followed a familiar mystery format, but Poker Face stood out. It was a wonderfully messy, yet well-executed series that consistently entertained viewers. Despite the positive response from both critics and audiences, the show was unfortunately canceled after only two seasons.

Peacock cancelled Poker Face due to low viewership numbers. The show’s high production costs also contributed to the decision.

Shows like Poker Face were truly original and cancellation after only one season felt unfair. The premise – with Charlie traveling to different locations and solving unique crimes – had endless potential. The way each mystery was structured allowed for a constantly evolving storyline with new characters, meaning the show could have continued indefinitely.

I’m really hoping Rian Johnson can find a new place for Poker Face to continue! He’s been working on getting a potential season 3 off the ground, and I hear it would even feature a brand new lead. We’re all waiting to see if he’s had any luck and if we’ll get to see more of the show – honestly, I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
