The Shelby legacy lives on.
The much-anticipated Netflix movie continuing the story of Peaky Blinders isn’t actually the end of the Peaky Blinders universe. Plans are underway for a new spinoff series, and Netflix has already commissioned two seasons of it.
What can viewers anticipate from the new series? As the streamer and the BBC revealed on October 2nd, the show will take place in Britain in 1953-roughly ten years following the events of the movie.
The new series opens with the observation that Birmingham, heavily damaged during WWII, is being rebuilt with concrete and steel. It marks a new chapter in Steven Knight‘s Peaky Blinders, focusing on a fierce power struggle for control of the city’s large-scale reconstruction. This is a time of both incredible opportunities and serious risks, and the Shelby family finds themselves at the center of all the violent action.
The sequel series centers on the next generation of the Shelby family, following the characters originally portrayed by Cillian Murphy in the six-season show that concluded in 2022, and will also be featured in the upcoming film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
I’m excited to share the next part of the Peaky Blinders story,” said Knight in a statement from Netflix. “Like before, it will be set in Birmingham and focus on the city rebuilding after the bombing during the Birmingham Blitz. The next generation of the Shelby family is now in charge, and it’s going to be an intense journey.”
No casting details have been revealed yet for the sequel series, which is being executive produced by Murphy. Each of these new shows will consist of six one-hour episodes, and filming will take place in Birmingham.
Regarding the Peaky Blinders movie, filming took place last year, but a release date hasn’t been revealed yet. Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is set during World War II. The story follows Shelby’s return to Birmingham after the city was bombed by the German Luftwaffe between 1940 and 1943-an event known as the Birmingham Blitz-where he takes on covert operations during the war.
