It’s been nearly three years since Peaky Blinders last aired on BBC One, so you might need a quick refresher before the new part of Steven Knight’s crime drama begins. We’re heading back to Birmingham!
The new film, The Immortal Man, brings Cillian Murphy back as Tommy Shelby, this time to cinemas. It’s being released in select UK theaters today, March 6th, and will be available on Netflix in two weeks. The cast also features stars like Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, and Barry Keoghan.
The movie takes place in 1940, during World War II, about six years after the events of the previous story involving the Shelby family and their crew.
Even though it’s been a while since the show aired, there are a few key events you might want to remember before seeing the movie. Here’s a quick refresher of 5 things to keep in mind before you go!
What happened to Tommy Shelby at the end of Peaky Blinders?

The season concluded with a shocking twist: Tommy’s life-threatening illness, which had been a central struggle throughout the series, was a lie. It was created by Doctor Holford, who was secretly working with fascists and trying to destroy Tommy.
So, after deciding he wanted to control how he went rather than just wait for his illness to take over, he actually changed his mind about ending things. Instead of going through with it, he got rid of everything he owned by burning the caravan where he’d been keeping it all. It was a pretty big turning point, honestly.
The movie ended with a powerfully symbolic image: Tommy riding off on a white horse. It felt like a real turning point for him, a visual promise of a new beginning and a chance to leave his past behind. It wasn’t just an exit, it was a statement – he was going after a fresh start, and the image really stuck with me.
Who died in the final season of Peaky Blinders?
The season ended with a death: Tommy’s cousin, Michael. They’d been fighting for a long time, ever since their relationship fell apart, and Michael had even tried to kill Tommy first. But Tommy managed to defend himself and ultimately killed Michael instead.
Tommy committed the murder, but it was just the newest in a series of heartbreaking losses for the Shelby family, following the deaths of his brother John, Aunt Polly, and daughter Ruby.
Honestly, of all the tough stuff Pete Doherty’s been through, it’s the loss of his seven-year-old son to illness that really sticks with me as the most devastating. You can see in interviews and just generally, how much that’s affected him – it’s clearly weighed heavily on his mind over the years. He’s had a lot of hardship, and that particular tragedy just seems to be the one that truly haunts him.
Who was Duke Shelby in Peaky Blinders?

A significant new development in the final season is the appearance of Duke, Tommy’s previously unknown son, portrayed by Conrad Khan, which seems likely to have a big impact on the story.
Tommy didn’t know this character before, but he’s now been revealed as the thief. Since the end of the show, he’s become more important, and Barry Keoghan plays him in the film.
The film opens with Duke now leading the Peaky Blinders while his father remains in hiding. The trailer suggests Duke is a harsh and unforgiving leader, essentially taking the gang back to the violent methods of 1919, as Ada observes.
Who was Hayden Stagg in Peaky Blinders?
Hayden Stagg, played by Stephen Graham and first appearing in the show’s final season, will be back for the upcoming movie.
We last saw him agreeing to help the Shelby company with trading and transport at the Liverpool docks. He and Tommy didn’t get along at first, so it will be interesting to see how their partnership plays out in the movie.
What happened to Arthur Shelby at the end of Peaky Blinders?
And then there’s Tommy’s erratic older brother Arthur, who is not listed in the cast for the film.
I’m really curious to see how the new film handles Arthur’s story. He dealt with some incredibly tough things – addiction, mental health struggles, and especially PTSD – and given that he’s seemingly no longer around, I’m anticipating a fascinating exploration of how his absence impacts everything.
He’ll likely be remembered, and even if he’s not shown in the film, his influence will continue to affect Tommy’s life.
