Peaky Blinders writer praises author Ian Fleming’s “underrated” James Bond novels as he pens new film’s script

Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, has suggested he’s drawing ideas from the James Bond novels by Ian Fleming – books he feels don’t get enough recognition – as he develops the next Bond film.

Ethan Hunt’s next mission is taking shape: Knight is writing the script for the 26th installment in the popular spy franchise, and Denis Villeneuve is directing.

In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Knight shared that he’s having a great time working on the new Bond film, though he couldn’t reveal specifics about his role. He described the experience as ‘fantastic’ and said he’s ‘loving it’.

Not much is known about the future of James Bond, but producer Barbara Broccoli has stated she’s primarily focused on capturing the tone and language found in Ian Fleming’s original novels.

As a huge fan, I have to say these books are incredible – seriously underrated as far as literature goes. What really gets me is the world the author built; it feels so real, almost palpable, but at the same time, it’s completely fantastical and dreamlike. Plus, I just adore his writing style and the way he crafts dialogue – it’s just so good!

He explained that he has a clear vision for how things should proceed and is constantly watching for the right opportunities. He’s collaborating with a truly exceptional team, and the results will be revealed in time.

Knight recently shared with The TopMob Writers’ Room that he’s really enjoying writing the screenplay.

Bond has become a legendary figure, like Robin Hood or King Arthur. He’s a cultural icon, not just in the UK but around the world, so it’s important to approach the character with reverence and care.

James Bond 26 will be released in cinemas.
