When we first meet Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, he’s a typical, tough bounty hunter in the Star Wars universe. His iconic line, “I can bring you in warm, or I can bring you in cold,” immediately shows us what kind of character he is, and sets the stage for his development throughout the first season and the series as a whole. Everything changes when he meets Grogu. Instead of only caring about his next job, Djarin becomes focused on protecting the child and defending him from those who are hunting him. The connection between Din Djarin and Grogu profoundly changed both of them, and that relationship will be a central focus in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Pedro Pascal discussed his character, Din Djarin, in the upcoming Star Wars film. He explained that Djarin is now working for the New Republic, which allows him to continue using his bounty hunting skills while staying true to his values. According to Pascal, this provides Djarin with the chance to ‘combine skill and morality.’ When we first meet Djarin, he’s motivated by skill and his Mandalorian Creed, but his relationship with Grogu has softened him, leading him to fight for what’s right and ‘disarming his armour,’ so to speak.
Will Star Wars Fans Like Din Djarin’s Role With the New Republic?

Let’s talk bounty hunters in the Star Wars universe. Traditionally, they’ve been shady characters, often working for the bad guys. Think Boba Fett chasing the Millennium Falcon for Vader, or Jango Fett siding with the Separatists, even Cad Bane constantly causing trouble in The Clone Wars. But the Disney+ shows are really trying something different. We’re seeing these characters become more than just villains. The bond between Din Djarin and Grogu is a perfect example, but The Book of Boba Fett really surprised me. Boba’s time with the Tusken Raiders genuinely changed him. He learned about honor and respect, and that’s now shaping how he governs his territory on Tatooine. It’s a refreshing take on a familiar archetype.
Shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett initially drew viewers in by offering a fresh look at the Star Wars universe – focusing on its criminal side and telling stories from the perspective of bounty hunters. These characters were usually supporting players, but now they got to be the heroes. We’ve seen many popular stories with flawed or morally gray main characters, so Star Wars could have easily explored that territory. Now, it’s interesting to consider how the franchise will handle a bounty hunter who is driven by a strong moral compass.
When it comes to The Mandalorian and Grogu, the show’s new direction shouldn’t be a major problem for viewers. Audiences have grown to care deeply about Din Djarin and Grogu, and their relationship is central to the entire series. After three seasons of fighting the remnants of the Empire, Din taking on bounty hunting work for the New Republic feels like a natural progression. He clearly disliked the Empire and Moff Gideon, so wanting to hunt down criminals to protect Grogu and the galaxy makes sense. He might worry someone else will try to harm Grogu, just like Gideon did. It would feel strange if he suddenly started working for the Empire and targeting New Republic officials.
It’s a welcome twist on a familiar Star Wars idea. We’re accustomed to bounty hunters working for the bad guys, so seeing one on the side of good is a refreshing change. Given the vastness of the Star Wars universe, it feels natural that some bounty hunters would choose their clients carefully. Lucasfilm is smart to avoid making all bounty hunters heroic; the presence of a villainous bounty hunter in The Mandalorian and Grogu proves that. Keeping bounty hunters morally diverse will keep the franchise interesting and prevent things from becoming predictable, and it’s a good step forward for the series.
