“Perhaps We Pushed the Envelope Too Much”: Robert Englund Finally Address Biggest Freddy Krueger Complaint

The Nightmare on Elm Street series remains incredibly popular, even decades after Wes Craven first introduced Freddy Krueger. While Craven’s initial film portrayed Freddy as a truly frightening villain with a few memorable lines, subsequent movies transformed him into a more comical, wisecracking character. Robert Englund, the actor most associated with Freddy Krueger, wasn’t bothered by this change, though he feels the humor went a bit too far in Freddy’s Dead.

While discussing the new 4K release of Nightmare on Elm Street with ComicBook, Robert Englund talked about whether the increasing humor in the Nightmare on Elm Street films felt true to the character of Freddy Krueger, or if it was a change from his original personality.

Freddy Krueger was known for his sarcastic and often mean-spirited humor. I often used the image of a cat playing with a mouse – enjoying the torment before the final act – to represent him. The original film had a lot of jokes, and maybe we went too far with the humor by the sixth movie, Freddy’s Dead. But we were really just giving the fans what they wanted. They loved Freddy’s personality, his wickedness, his edgy humor, and his jokes, so we leaned into all of that.

Which ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Movie Is Robert Englund’s Favorite?

New Line Cinema

Like any fan, Robert Englund has a favorite Nightmare on Elm Street film. Surprisingly, he chose Nightmare 4: The Dream Master, citing the creative freedom he experienced while filming as the main reason. He explained:

I’m really pleased with how I performed in ‘Part 4,’ the Renny Harlin film. Renny gave me a lot of freedom and understood that Freddy Krueger only exists within the dream world – a sort of mental landscape of dreams and nightmares. Because of that, he isn’t actually real; he’s created by the subconscious mind of the person experiencing the nightmare, which allowed for a more artistic and imaginative approach.

Most fans of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies would jump at the chance to see Robert Englund reprise his role as Freddy Krueger. However, Englund has repeatedly stated he no longer feels he could convincingly play the part, effectively removing himself from consideration for any future films. This leaves the future of the franchise uncertain.

It’s common for horror villains like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers to be played by different actors because they hide their faces. However, replacing Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger is especially difficult. That’s because Englund is Freddy – his look, voice, and how he moves are all uniquely tied to the actor. The 2010 attempt to reboot the series with Jackie Earle Haley didn’t resonate with fans, and no new ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ movies have been made since.

Robert Englund recently shared his thoughts on a potential A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, stating he believes it shouldn’t simply recreate the original film. Instead, he’d prefer to see a fresh take on the character, ideally with a new actor in the role. Only time will tell if that happens, but one thing is certain: whoever takes on the part will have a tough act to follow, considering Englund’s iconic sweater and glove.
