Phineas and Ferb’s fifth season began with a shocking preview that led fans to think some characters might not survive the Disney show. A dramatic scene showed Linda Flynn-Fletcher being struck by an energy beam during a battle between Dr. Doofenshmirtz and Perry the Platypus. Fortunately, Linda wasn’t seriously hurt – she was simply turned into a cloud, which still created a big problem for the main characters. We recently had the chance to talk with co-creators Jeff “Swampy” Marsh and Dan Povenmire at the Savannah College of Art and Design Animation Festival about this unexpected plotline.
We spoke with the animators and asked if Povenire and Marsh were aware of the negative reaction after the preview showed Linda might die. Dan said that while they were focused on making ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Mom’, they were pleased with the reaction. He explained, “We were really busy then, but it was great to see such a strong response. I think the ending of that episode is one of our best moments. I showed it to about five people outside the show, and even those who weren’t huge fans were laughing, then were completely shocked when it happened!”
Linda is Still Amongst Us
Marsh shared his thoughts, saying he enjoyed watching the many ‘reaction videos’ popping up online. He described how people were thrilled the show had returned, then reacted with surprise – “I really loved seeing all the reaction videos because everyone was so happy that the show was back, only to go ‘AAAAA’!” Povenmire jokingly added, “She disintegrated so completely that viewers thought there was no way she could recover!” He then revealed a playful detail about the pre-season hype: “What’s fun is that with all the press beforehand, people were asking us what to expect from season five, and I told them, ‘well we’re going to kill off a main character in the first episode, and then later this season, Phineas and Ferb will build a bookshelf with their dad.’ Both of those things actually happened!”
Good news for fans! Phineas and Ferb will be back for a sixth season next year. According to creator Dan Povenmire, the new season will focus on Irving as the central character. He says they’re aiming for the same fun vibe as season five and that some episodes will become truly memorable for viewers. Povenmire explained, “Fans will watch season six and go ‘Oh my God, this happened in this episode!’” The team is also planning to playfully experiment with the show’s established formulas while remaining faithful to its core spirit.
