Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Plan Reportedly Revealed: Jack Sparrow’s Son, Margot Robbie, & What About Johnny Depp?

Disney is exploring new, original movies to attract younger audiences, but they’re not abandoning their popular franchises. While Marvel and Lucasfilm are busy with new projects, Disney is also working on a reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean. A sixth installment has been in development for a while, but hasn’t been officially approved yet. Recent reports suggest Disney is still figuring out the best direction for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, and it seems they’re considering a combination of different ideas.

Jeff Sneider, a well-connected industry source, revealed some details about Pirates of the Caribbean 6 in his latest newsletter. The script is being written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who has received an Oscar nomination. The story will reportedly focus on Jack Sparrow’s son and a new character played by Margot Robbie, who was previously considered for a separate Pirates film. The goal is to create a movie that feels like the original Pirates films, but with a fresh, updated feel and a more controlled budget. Disney’s new CEO, Josh D’Amaro, and the company’s president and Chief Creative Officer, Dana Walden, are reportedly making this film a high priority.

While Jack Sparrow’s son is expected to play a key role in the new Pirates of the Caribbean film, it’s still uncertain whether Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Jack Sparrow. A return for Depp isn’t confirmed, and Disney’s financial considerations are a major factor. Depp would likely be very expensive to hire, so Disney might choose not to bring him back to keep the movie’s budget under control.

Should Jack Sparrow Be Part of the Pirates of the Caribbean Reboot?

Jack Sparrow has always been the central figure in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, so it makes sense Disney wants to include him in the planned reboot somehow. Even if Johnny Depp doesn’t reprise the role, they could attract viewers by focusing on a story about Jack Sparrow’s son continuing his adventures at sea. However, this approach risks becoming overly dependent on familiar characters and storylines – a common pitfall for long-running franchises.

Many popular franchises like Marvel, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings have had trouble moving beyond their original stories, and Pirates of the Caribbean now faces a similar risk, despite having no real need to. Introducing a reboot centered around a new character, like Robbie’s, could give the series a genuinely fresh start. However, connecting the new story too strongly to Jack Sparrow could diminish Robbie’s role as the lead. Even without Johnny Depp reprising his role, the plot involving Jack Sparrow’s son could easily steal the focus from the new film.

Disney’s choice is surprising, considering Margot Robbie has proven she can lead a major blockbuster film, as seen with Barbie. While not every film she’s been in has been a hit (A Big Bold Beautiful Journey was a significant failure), the Pirates of the Caribbean name still draws audiences. Given that many viewers grew weary of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow character as the original series continued, this new movie might have been better off starting fresh with Robbie’s character and building the franchise around her, rather than relying on familiar elements.

It’s important to remember that plans for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 are still very early and subject to change – they haven’t even hired a director yet. We’ll be watching to see how the script develops, as it sounds like they’re trying to blend familiar characters and storylines with new ones. Disney will need to handle this carefully to ensure the reboot succeeds, or the new series could quickly fall apart.
