Disney has been planning the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies for a while. It’s been eight years since the last film, and there’s been a lot of discussion about what comes next. One of the biggest questions is who will star in a new movie. There are reportedly at least two projects in development: one that won’t include Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, and another that could bring him back to the role.

While Johnny Depp might return as Jack Sparrow, it’s uncertain if other popular characters from the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films will reappear. Though the focus has been on Depp’s character across five movies, actors like Kevin McNally (Joshamee Gibbs) have been in every installment. There are many characters who could potentially return, and Sam Claflin, who played Philip Swift, has expressed interest in reprising his role.

While promoting his new Prime Video show Lazarus, we asked actor Claflin about the possibility of returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, especially after his unexpected departure in On Stranger Tides. He played Philip Swift, and his character had a romantic connection with Syrena, played by Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey (a mermaid, if you remember!). Claflin responded by saying he’d love to return to that world if fans and producers would make it happen.

Reflecting on filming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the actor shared a surprising reason for returning to the role. He explained that it was his first major film experience and he was incredibly nervous, feeling overwhelmed and unprepared. He took the job—and himself—very seriously, believing it deserved that dedication, much like his character, Philip.

Looking back, I realize I didn’t have enough fun during that time. I wish I’d just enjoyed every moment more. I’d love to revisit that experience – it would be a dream come true. But it’s out of my control, so Jerry Bruckheimer, if you’re listening, please make it happen!

While it seems improbable, a return for Claflin’s character isn’t impossible after fourteen years, especially considering his storyline wasn’t fully resolved. The Pirates of the Caribbean films are known for bringing characters back from the dead or after long absences. Captain Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush, famously returned after seemingly dying in the first movie. Others, like Damian O’Hare’s Lieutenant Gillette, have reappeared after years, and the possibility of Davy Jones’ return was hinted at but never confirmed. Ultimately, in this series, you can never rule anything out.
