More information is coming out about the Pixar movie—or possible series—that people have been talking about. It’s now confirmed that Pete Docter, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, made the decision to cancel the project, which had been in development for three years and involved almost 50 people.
The project initially known as Be Fri (Best Friends) was intended to be one of the studio’s first original films in years, following Hoppers, which premiered in the US on March 6th. However, it was replaced in the summer 2025 lineup by Elio, a film that wasn’t successful despite director Pete Docter attempting to rework it mid-production, which led to director Adrian Molina leaving the project—a project that drew on Molina’s own childhood experiences. Docter later explained that he realized his priority was to create films with broad appeal, especially after more personal Pixar stories like Elemental and Lightyear didn’t perform as well. When discussing the changes made to Elio, he stated, “We’re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy.”
Be Fri Had Amazing Potential—Like Most Personal Stories
I’m finally sharing some video footage I’ve had since 2024. I’m taking a bit of a risk by posting it, but here it is! #BeFri

The movie Be Fri centered around a relatable experience: the painful end of a childhood friendship and the confusion that follows. Director Kristen Lester had spent over three years developing the project before it was cancelled. While some Pixar fans are upset the film won’t be made, others believe the initial idea wasn’t strong enough for a full-length movie. One fan commented, “It had potential, but a simple breakup between friends might have worked better as a short film. It’s still frustrating to see three years of effort go to waste.”
One fan noticed similarities between the plot of Be Fri and KPop Demon Hunters, the record-breaking movie that became a huge success for Netflix and Sony Animation. They pointed out the irony, noting that KPop Demon Hunters (released in 2025) was a major animated hit, blending magical girl themes with K-pop and focusing on love and acceptance.
