What’s behind that Pixar sequel news?
After John Lasseter stepped down as head of Pixar, Peter Docter took over. While Pixar has continued to release generally good films, their quality has been inconsistent, and last year’s ‘Elio’ performed poorly at the box office, earning only $154 million despite being a watchable movie. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal highlighted that employees believe a key issue is Docter’s tendency to encourage new directors to create very personal, autobiographical films that didn’t resonate with many viewers. Now, Pixar has announced sequels to two of its most popular movies, which will likely please fans.
The first of the Pixar sequel news…..
A third Monsters Inc. movie is in the works. The first sequel, Monsters University, actually earned more money worldwide ($743.5 million) than the original film, and its success led to the creation of the TV series, Monsters at Work, which lasted for two seasons. Details about the director and storyline for the new movie are currently being kept secret.
And the other sequel?
Pixar also announced a third Incredibles movie! While the news first came out at the D23 fan event in August 2024, we now know Brad Bird, the director of the first two films, is writing the script and producing. However, Peter Sohn, who directed Elemental, will be taking on directing duties, and the movie is scheduled to come out in 2028.
And last but not least!
I just heard some exciting news for animation fans! A sequel to Coco is officially in the works! The first Coco was a massive hit, earning over $823 million globally, and Disney is planning to bring us the next chapter in 2029. I’m already looking forward to it!
Pixar isn’t in trouble, but after the film Elio didn’t perform well, they’re now focusing more on making movies that will attract a broader audience.
