There’s been a lot of discussion about the upcoming remake of Dragon Quest 7, called Reimagined, which comes out in February. Some people are wondering about Square Enix’s choice to simplify the game’s long and complex story.
However, producer Takeshi Ichikawa believes the story could actually connect with today’s viewers, even with the changes that have been made.
Ichikawa recently told Game*Spark that the original story might have been considered too dark when it was first created, but he believes that could actually be a positive thing when the game releases in 2026, according to a translation by Automaton.
We started working on Dragon Quest VII Reimagined because we believed its special mood and style would really appeal to players now, according to the team.
Ichikawa notes that when Final Fantasy VII was first released, it was known for being particularly sad and gloomy compared to other games in the series. However, he points out that modern gamers are now used to much darker and more serious storylines.
We’re confident this updated version will allow players to connect with the story and characters of Final Fantasy VII on a much deeper level.
Dragon Quest 7 stands out from earlier games in the series. It focuses more on sad stories and characters dealing with difficult past experiences.
Dragon Quest 7 feels like a more grown-up entry in the series, and it’s easy to understand why Ichikawa thought so. Stories with more depth and complexity became increasingly common in video games after Dragon Quest 7 first came out.
