It’s possible that we are still a few years from Sony launching its next top-tier console, yet whispers suggest that the rumored PS6 could emulate one of the standout features of the Nintendo Switch.
Although Xbox aims to convert various devices into Xbox, even its upcoming portable version, it’s rumored that Sony is actively developing the next generation console, known as the PlayStation 6.
While there’s been minimal official information about the upcoming Sony console, a recent leak hints that the PS6 might deviate significantly from any previous Sony console designs. Some rumors even suggest it could resemble a Nintendo Switch in its versatility.
A YouTube channel known as Moore’s Law is Dead, which has a reputation for revealing accurate technical details about past PlayStation devices, recently posted a video hinting at the possible specifications of a potential ‘portable PlayStation 6’.
The new, portable device, rumored to launch alongside the conventional PS6 home console, is said to be compatible with a docking station, much like the Nintendo Switch consoles. This means players can enjoy their gaming experience both connected to a TV at home or on-the-go without any hassle.
According to reports, the PS6 portable console is said to feature an AMD APU with four Zen 6c CPU cores, along with two additional cores. Additionally, it boasts a 16 x RDNA 5 CUs GPU running at 1.2GHz in handheld mode and 1.65GHz when docked. This suggests that the PS6, when docked, could potentially outperform the PS5 in terms of processing power.
Additionally, the video suggests that the anticipated release date for the handheld version of PS6 might be towards the end of 2027, with an estimated price tag of approximately $500.
This new device marks Sony’s return to the portable gaming market, which they last entered with the launch of the PlayStation Vita in 2011. Although the Vita developed a dedicated following, it didn’t achieve widespread commercial success.
The PlayStation 5 has indeed achieved impressive sales, surpassing 80 million units by August 2025. However, it’s still a few million units shy of what the PS3 managed, and it’s approximately 40 million units behind the sales of the PS4.
The Nintendo Switch has sold over 153 million units, the potential successor is already outperforming sales records, and Xbox is joining the fray. It seems Sony wants to re-enter the handheld market, but the question remains if they can create something remarkable or just a subpar copy.
