It’s easy to see why people are disappointed about the possible delay of the PlayStation 6. It means fans will have to wait even longer for Sony’s new console, and it extends the lifespan of the current generation, which many are already tired of. This frustration is made worse by the fact that game delays are becoming more and more common, with players often waiting years for even minor releases.
While I understand the disappointment, I think there’s actually reason to be optimistic about the PlayStation 6 delay. It seems Sony had limited control over the situation, but this setback could ultimately be a good thing. It might lead to lower prices for consumers when the new console finally arrives, preventing immediate financial strain, and could even allow people to get more value out of their current consoles. Though it’s not certain, I believe we should view this delay as a positive development, not a negative one.
The PS6 Delay Will Hopefully Result In A Cheaper Console

The price of the next generation of gaming consoles is a bigger concern than ever before. There’s a lot of worry about the rumored high cost of the next Xbox, which could exclude many loyal fans. Some believe it’s becoming more like a high-end PC than a traditional console, and a steep price would likely limit its appeal. Steam’s new handheld gaming PC is also causing concern, as it’s feared it will be too expensive, defeating the purpose of offering a more affordable entry point to PC gaming for console players. Even the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 suggests we’re heading into a more expensive era for consoles, as its current pricing seems out of line with its value.
Players are understandably frustrated by the constant price increases for consoles this generation, especially considering past consoles generally became more affordable over time. I believe these price hikes mean fewer people will be interested in a PlayStation 6 if it’s significantly more expensive than expected. If the PS6 were to launch around 2027 as originally anticipated, that’s likely what would happen. The high demand for memory chips, driven largely by the AI industry, has made components very expensive, forcing console makers to spend a lot more money just to get the parts needed for the next generation of consoles.
Look, as a gamer, I’m hearing that if PlayStation buys all the memory chips now instead of waiting for prices to come down, the PS6 is going to be seriously expensive. And honestly, pricing it way too high would be a huge mistake for Sony – that’s supposedly why they’re holding off on production. It’s not just the price, though. We’re not seeing massive leaps in tech lately, and rumors say the PS6 might not even play physical PS4 games. That all adds up to a console that just won’t feel worth the money, even before you factor in the chip costs.
Keeping the cost down is key to appealing to casual gamers who probably won’t notice a difference between games on a PS5 Pro and a PS6. A delay actually helps both future buyers and current PS5 owners. For those considering a PS6, it allows for further development. And for those who already have a PS5, it gives the console more time to reach its full potential and justify its cost.
The PlayStation 6’s Delay Will Benefit The PS5

It’s fair to say the PlayStation 5 hasn’t fully reached its potential. While there are some fantastic games available, the number of exclusive, new titles is surprisingly low, especially compared to the PS4. The PS5 also hasn’t felt particularly groundbreaking; most of its major games have been sequels or remasters, not truly taking advantage of the console’s powerful hardware. For its first few years, Sony continued to release many games on both the PS4 and PS5, which made it feel like the PS5 was simply an upgraded version of its predecessor rather than a new generation.
Allowing the PlayStation 5 to remain relevant for a few more years benefits game developers, both those working directly with Sony and independent studios, by giving them more time to create new titles. Crucially, it also encourages Sony to release any games they’ve been developing for the PS5, preventing the console’s lifespan from ending with a shortage of new content. It’s a bit ironic that games potentially meant for the PS6 might end up on the PS5 instead, especially since a similar strategy hurt the PS5 in the past. However, if the PS6 is delayed as some predict – potentially until 2029 – it would give Sony ample time to develop a strong launch lineup for the new console.
It would be great if the PS5 could prove its worth, particularly if the next PlayStation is very costly. And if the PS6 really does launch without a disc drive, anyone with a collection of physical PS5 games might be stuck. So, a larger and better selection of games for the PS5 by the time the PS6 arrives would mean those who choose not to upgrade, or can’t afford to, will still have a console with plenty to offer.
Delaying the PlayStation 6 might actually be a good thing, especially considering the cost of gaming right now. With the new Switch just released and game prices now hitting $80, buying a brand-new console feels like too much to ask. While not everyone will feel this way, many players are likely in the same boat. This delay, though annoying, will probably benefit gamers in the long run, and could finally push Sony to focus on supporting games for the current PlayStation 5.
