Next month, a free-to-play online game that’s only available on PlayStation will be removed from the PlayStation Store. This is happening before the game shuts down completely this fall, but only on PS4. Players will still be able to access it on PS5, as well as on PC and mobile devices. The publisher has explained why they’re removing the PS4 version, which is unusual – often, these kinds of announcements don’t come with much detail or explanation.
Hotta Studio and Perfect World have announced that Tower of Fantasy will no longer be available on PlayStation 4, just three years after its release on both PS4 and PS5 in 2023. The game will be removed from the PlayStation Store on April 7th, and players won’t be able to make purchases within the game after September 22nd. Finally, on October 20th, the servers will shut down completely, making the PS4 version of Tower of Fantasy permanently unplayable.
Statement About the PS4 Shutdown
Perfect World says the PS4 version of the game is ending not because players stopped playing it, but because of technical problems making it run well and limits on how big the game file could be. Players who want to continue playing will be able to move their progress, items, and accounts to other versions of the game.
Perfect World thanks PlayStation 4 players for their support of Tower of Fantasy. However, they’ve announced they will no longer update or support the game on PlayStation 4 due to technical challenges with performance and the game’s size.
We’re not sure exactly how many players will be affected because we don’t have precise numbers for PlayStation 4 and 5. However, the game has almost 16,000 reviews on the PlayStation Store, indicating a large number of PlayStation fans have tried it, giving it an average rating of 3.72 out of 5. Critics have given it a score of 65 on Metacritic, based on over a dozen reviews.
This announcement comes after news earlier this month that another PlayStation 4 game will be discontinued later this year. As the console ages, these types of shutdowns are becoming increasingly frequent.
