Sony has simplified the process for obtaining refunds on digitally purchased PlayStation games, as reported by PlayStation Lifestyle. Players can now initiate a refund request for their game purchases via the PlayStation Store website or through the PS App on Android and iOS devices. At present, the option for refund requests is not directly accessible through the PS5 console itself.
To get a refund for a game or other digital item bought from PlayStation, users should sign in to the PlayStation Store via the website or PS App. Once logged in, they can view their past transactions by navigating to a menu on the upper right corner of the screen. In this history, they are able to initiate a refund for a digital purchase.
In simple terms, when making a digital purchase, certain rules apply for a potential refund. Within the past two weeks, you can return a game purchase, but if the game has already been downloaded, it’s usually non-refundable. Sony does allow exceptions if the product is deemed “faulty.” Additionally, under their new policy, users can now request refunds for downloadable content (DLCs) as well.
In simpler terms, if you buy in-game items with real money, such as GTA$ Cash Packs or other boosters, you can still ask for a refund before the game is initially launched after your purchase. This is because these items are provided to players at the start of the next game launch. For instance, if you start playing GTA 5 immediately after buying a Cash Pack, it won’t be refundable. However, it will be refundable between the time of purchase and the subsequent launch of the game.
You can cancel pre-orders anytime prior to the game or DLC release, securing a full refund. This rule is flexible because there’s no 14-day restriction if the game hasn’t been launched yet. Pre-loading, meanwhile, allows for refunds as long as the primary game file hasn’t been downloaded. Cancelling also prevents additional content from functioning. Sony advises PS5 users to disable the Automatic Downloads setting before requesting a refund, as downloads on PS5 might start automatically if this feature is enabled.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to mention that while this latest update does make it simpler to cancel mistaken purchases, it’s not quite as player-friendly compared to systems used by other digital storefronts like Steam. For example, on PC platforms, gamers can request refunds for downloaded games if they haven’t been played beyond the initial two hours, and the game is still within the 14-day window.
However, it seems Sony might exclude downloadable titles from their refund policy because consoles can still run games even when offline. This move could be a precautionary measure to prevent unscrupulous players from exploiting the system by playing a game after a refund has been issued, simply by staying offline on their console post-download.
