PlayStation Plus members are calling a currently free PS4 and PS5 game the best they’ve played so far this year. It’s available to those with the Extra or Premium tiers of the PlayStation Plus service, which are the mid-range and top-tier subscriptions. However, it’s not included with the basic PS Plus Essential plan, which offers a different set of free games.
I can’t believe I’m just getting around to Sayonara Wild Hearts now! It’s been out since 2019, originally on PS4, and finally made its way to PS5 earlier this year. It was a bit of a hidden gem back then – seriously, it has an 88 on Metacritic and was nominated for three Game Awards! Even with all the awesome games that came out in 2025, this six-year-old rhythm game is the one that’s really stuck with me.
“Best Game I Played This Year”
I was browsing the PlayStation Plus subreddit the other day and saw a really popular post raving about a game from 2019. It seemed a little out of the blue at first, but then I realized why people were talking about it again. Sony announced this month that it, along with three other games, is leaving the PS Plus Extra and Premium libraries in January. It’s a good reminder to check it out if you haven’t!
The post exclaimed, “Wow, what an incredible game!” While the gameplay isn’t revolutionary, the game’s style is amazing – the art and music are truly phenomenal and left a lasting impression. I’d heard about it before, but didn’t think I’d enjoy it so much. It feels like a much more intense version of BIT.TRIP RUNNER, and it could very well be the best game I’ve played all year, considering how many I’ve tried.
One player described the game as being so good they might purchase it even after it’s no longer available on the service, calling it a “playable music album.” Another commenter shared that they were completely blown away after playing without any prior knowledge of the game.
One of the PS4’s Best Rhythm Games
If you haven’t heard of Sayonara Wild Hearts, it’s a rhythm-based action game created by Simogo and published by Annapurna Interactive. It was Simogo’s eighth game since the Swedish studio was founded in 2010, and they were previously known for their mobile games. More recently, in 2024, they released Lorelei and the Laser Eyes.
This game, currently available for $6.49 (normally $12.99) on the PlayStation Store, lets you explore a unique pop soundtrack, compete for the best scores, and uncover the universe’s hidden harmony. It’s a short experience, taking only a couple of hours to complete, and is available for free with a PlayStation Plus subscription.
