PlayStation Plus Subscribers Worried Price Increase Is Coming Soon

PlayStation Plus members on Reddit and other platforms are concerned that Sony may raise the price of its subscription service. This worry comes after Microsoft significantly increased the cost of Xbox Game Pass. The most expensive Game Pass plan now costs $30 per month. Currently, the highest tier of PlayStation Plus Premium is $16 a month – a considerable difference. However, this gap might not remain, as Sony has often mirrored competitor pricing in the past. This suggests a price hike for PlayStation Plus is possible.

Following a price increase for the Xbox Series X in May, the PS5 implemented its own price hike in August, for example. We’ve seen a similar pattern with game prices – when Xbox started charging $70 for new games, PlayStation followed. However, PlayStation Plus prices haven’t universally increased since September 2023. There was a limited price increase for some users earlier this year, but it wasn’t widespread and didn’t affect the United States. Additionally, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate releases a large number of games on day one each year. While PS Plus also offers day-one games, it offers far fewer, which reduces its costs and potential sales revenue.

A Market Opportunity Is a Market Opportunity

Although there’s good reason to believe the price of PS Plus won’t go up, Sony will likely seize any chance to increase profits if the market allows. Even with a price increase, PS Plus would still be a very affordable option compared to other services. Given that both the US dollar and the Japanese yen are currently weaker than they were in 2023 – when prices last went up and operating costs were lower – Sony might see this as a chance to recover some lost earnings.

One PlayStation Plus subscriber on Reddit commented that the products aren’t directly comparable, but Sony will likely raise prices whenever possible. Another PlayStation fan agreed, stating:

Another PlayStation Plus member stated: “It feels like everyone is trying to offer the lowest prices, and they’re all involved. True competition seems to be gone because they’d rather work *with* each other than compete.”

Currently, everything is just guesswork, but PS Plus subscribers have valid reasons to be concerned. Sony likely won’t offer a price as low as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but we anticipate the 12-month subscription for PS Plus Premium could cost around $20 per month in the next few months. In the short term, PlayStation Plus members are about to receive some excellent free games for October, and it won’t be overly expensive to obtain them.
