PlayStation Plus Will See Continued Investment Thanks to Growth – VP of Global Services

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President Hideaki Nishino, the PlayStation Plus subscription service has experienced significant growth. More recently, PlayStation Vice President of Global Services Nick Maguire verified that the growth rate for PS Plus on PS5 is accelerating compared to its expansion on the PS4 console.

In a chat with Game File, Maguire discussed the impressive engagement levels for PlayStation Plus, noting a significant increase in subscribers for the premium tiers – Premium and Extra. To quote Maguire directly: “Engagement with Plus is currently at an all-time high.

In earlier PlayStation generations like the PS3, PlayStation Plus wasn’t strictly required for online multiplayer gaming. However, it became essential with the debut of the PS4 for accessing online play. Additionally, the subscription service offered free games to players, expanding their collection. More recently, in 2022, an updated version of the service was launched, offering multiple tiers and exceeding expectations as mentioned by Maguire.

He stated that these games offer a fresh approach to connect with our audience, and they provide additional worth for partners by introducing new players to their games. The level of interaction we observe is extremely encouraging, as evidenced by the increasing number of individuals selecting the game catalog and consistently returning each month.

Maguire pointed out that although Sony is still enhancing the service by incorporating new elements such as game streaming on PlayStation Portal to attract more subscribers, they remain hesitant about launching their own games on the platform immediately upon release. Instead, Sony prefers to maintain its approach of offering three or four third-party (often indie) titles for PS Plus and strengthening the library with a classic PS5 game.

Maguire stated that our approach of identifying and releasing around four to five movies simultaneously with their initial release (day-and-date titles), along with our strategy of introducing games when they’re at least 12 or 18 months old, has been very effective in maintaining a good balance on the platform.

Concerning accessing classic PlayStation games from older consoles via PS Plus, Maguire addressed the challenge of incorporating PS3 games due to the distinctive hardware of the console, which prevents its games from running directly on the hardware of the PS5. Instead, PS3 games are usually made accessible through cloud streaming.

Maguire mentioned that we’ll still be able to view PS3 games via streaming, “We haven’t dismissed the possibility. There’s potential there. However, many PS3 games are already being streamed.

Essentially, Maguire points out that while there’s been some criticism in the feedback about PlayStation Plus game releases, the company intends to keep pouring resources into the service.

He mentioned that we’ll keep paying attention to gamers’ preferences and strive to offer even greater benefits. He’s quite pleased with our recent accomplishments, and eagerly awaits the feedback and interaction from new players.
