PlayStation has faced criticism for frequently re-releasing updated versions of its popular games, like The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part 2, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, over the past few years. Ironically, they’ve now decided to shut down Bluepoint Games, a studio particularly well-known for creating these high-quality remakes and remastered versions.
I just heard some really sad news – apparently, the console company is closing down its studio in Texas. It sounds like around 70 people are going to lose their jobs when it officially happens in March. A spokesperson said it came after they took a look at how things were going with the business, but it’s still awful to hear.
A PlayStation spokesperson praised Bluepoint Games as a highly skilled team, highlighting their technical abilities and the outstanding games they’ve created for PlayStation fans. The spokesperson also expressed gratitude for their dedication, imagination, and quality work.
Bluepoint Games’ Next Game Was a Mystery

Bluepoint Games became well-known for expertly rebuilding and updating existing video games. With the exception of their first game, Blast Factor (a 2006 PS3 title), and some supporting work on other projects, Bluepoint has focused entirely on remasters and remakes. They first gained recognition with the 2009 God of War Collection for the PS3, and have since revitalized classics like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, the Metal Gear Solid series (Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker), the Uncharted trilogy, and Gravity Rush.
Many older games received simple updates, which were generally considered great ways to revisit classics. But Bluepoint Games took a different approach with their 2018 version of Shadow of the Colossus and 2020’s Demon’s Souls. These weren’t just updates; they were full-fledged remakes, going far beyond what most people would expect from a remaster.
The studio had a long history with PlayStation, dating back to its very first game, but wasn’t actually purchased by them until September 2021. Because Demon’s Souls was released before the acquisition, the team hasn’t released a game as a first-party PlayStation studio yet.
Following the success of the Demon’s Souls remake, Bluepoint Games apparently began working on a new God of War game designed as a live-service title – meaning it would be continuously updated with new content. Leaked images showed the game featured Greek-style buildings. While Bluepoint is known for its excellent remakes – they’d previously remastered older God of War titles – this project never launched. This failed game is the latest in a series of canceled live-service games from PlayStation, which has also resulted in studio shutdowns and job losses. It highlights PlayStation’s struggles with this type of ongoing game format.
After their previous project was cancelled, it’s unclear what Bluepoint Games moved on to. Fans speculated they might be developing a remake or sequel to Bloodborne, especially after their successful work on the God of War game, and given their prior experience with FromSoftware titles. However, there was never any solid evidence to support this, and a recent industry source indicated that a Bloodborne project isn’t currently in development.
