PlayStation Studios’ Mobile Push Seems Dead as Layoff Reports Continue

There are new reports that PlayStation is planning more layoffs, and some believe Sony’s efforts to create games for mobile devices are failing.

Last week, PlayStation Studios closed down Dark Outlaw Games before the studio could release any games. Also, there were layoffs within PlayStation’s mobile gaming department, but this news was overshadowed by announcements about the PS5.

The story is gaining traction, with Mobilegamer.biz reporting that PlayStation has laid off approximately 50 employees from its Studio Business Group. This supports an earlier report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.

Mobilegamer.biz contacted Sony after discovering, through a LinkedIn profile, that PlayStation Studios’ mobile gaming division had been closed. Sony has not yet provided a comment on the matter.

Sony’s latest effort to succeed in the mobile gaming market, focusing on popular franchises like Horizon and Ratchet & Clank, hasn’t been very impressive.

The recent layoffs will likely raise concerns about the future of Sony’s mobile games. Games like MLB The Show Mobile and Horizon Steel Frontiers will now be closely watched, and there’s a real possibility that Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble – which seemed promising when first shown – might be cancelled before it’s even finished.

Honestly, I’m expecting to hear a lot more about what’s going on with PlayStation’s mobile games soon. Especially if people who used to work there start sharing what they know – that’s usually when things really come to light.
