Pluribus Episode 3 Recap & Ending Explained

Following the initial setup of its central conflict and characters in the first two episodes, Pluribus delves deeper into Carol’s journey in episode 3, revealing her growing understanding of the infected collective consciousness.

Near the end of Pluribus episode 2, Carol nearly allows her chaperone, Zosia, to depart. But she changes her mind at the last second and decides to keep Zosia with her. The third episode begins with Carol and Zosia returning home, after which Carol tries to reach out to another person who is immune, this time located in Paraguay. Sadly, this attempt doesn’t go well either.

The third episode of the Apple TV sci-fi show ends with Zosia rescuing Carol from a grenade, leading Carol to a surprising discovery about the infected. Just before the credits roll, Carol questions one of the infected – a “worker bee” – and seems to realize she might be able to save the world.

While waiting for news about Zosia at the hospital, Carol starts talking to someone else who is infected. The person tries to comfort her, but Carol surprisingly asks if they’d give her a grenade again. They immediately agree, which makes Carol understand that people linked to the hive mind have trouble refusing requests. It seems they view saying ‘no’ as an act of rebellion, something that goes against their ingrained need to work together.

Carol pushes the AI’s boundaries by directly asking if they would provide her with an atomic bomb. Initially, the AI resists, attempting to guide her through the ethical considerations of nuclear weapons. But when Carol demands a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer, their programming compels them to comply, responding with ‘yes’. This moment is significant for Carol, as it reveals the AI’s tendency to agree to requests, no matter how dangerous.

If Carol is cautious, she might be able to control those infected and use them to search for a cure. She needs to act quickly, before they try to convert her. This gives her a significant advantage – she’s a threat to them, and she can use that to get them to cooperate and help her find a solution.

Why Zosia Saves Carol From The Grenade

In episode 3 of the Apple TV show, Zosia misinterprets a sarcastic comment from Carol and surprisingly gifts her a live grenade. After having a few drinks, Carol playfully handles the grenade, believing it’s a fake. She carelessly removes the pin, and things quickly become dangerous. The spoon pops off, and Zosia bravely intervenes, snatching the grenade and throwing it outside to save Carol’s life. Zosia is seriously hurt in the process, further demonstrating the incredible selflessness of the infected humans.

Zosia’s actions, in a way, were about protecting herself. Because everyone now experiences life as a single consciousness after the ‘happiness apocalypse,’ even one person dying affects them all. Understanding the grenade could hurt both her and Carol, and even the entire collective, she threw it away from them. This initially made Carol question her own beliefs, but a final conversation with another infected person helped her understand that selflessness doesn’t make the infected more human – it just means they act differently.

Why Carol Wants The Hive To Forget Everything About Helen

Carol is still deeply saddened by Helen’s death. If Helen were alive and still part of the hive, Carol likely would have adjusted to the current situation more easily. But because Helen is gone, Carol resents the hive’s attempts to keep her memory – and a part of her – alive. Carol’s sense of self is closely tied to her relationship with Helen. As shown in the episode’s opening, Carol felt most human and emotionally open when she was with Helen.

Carol doesn’t see the infected as people, and she wants them to stay separate from her memories of her late partner. She’s afraid they’ll replace Helen, and she wants to preserve the uniqueness of their relationship by mourning Helen privately. It will be compelling to see if Carol eventually accepts the infected’s attempts to honor Helen’s memory, or if she continues to resist their inclusion.

Choosing to distance herself could leave her feeling even more alone and unhappy. But if she chooses the other option, she’d find peace by giving up what she feels defines her, though it would come with a significant sacrifice.

Why The Hive Does Not Leave Carol Alone

Some viewers believe the infected people are secretly working against Carol, trying to trick her and cause trouble. However, if they were truly malicious and upset by her resistance, they would have acted against her already. It seems those connected to the hive mind are actually as good as they say they are, and genuinely care for Carol despite her not being infected.

Because the hive mind contains the memories of every human, it understands Helen’s feelings for Carol. This might be why it’s protecting her. Essentially, everyone connected to the hive feels a strong sense of unity, making it difficult for them to respect Helen’s need for personal space and independence.

Why The Immune Paraguay Resident Does Not Talk To Carol

After discovering a man in Paraguay had completely isolated himself from those infected, Carol tried to reach out to him, believing he’d understand her doubts about what humanity had become. However, Manousos Qviedo repeatedly refused to speak with her, hanging up the phone and even verbally attacking her. Losing her temper, Carol finally called him back and returned the abuse.

It’s odd that Carol doesn’t think the man might have mistaken her for one of the infected. He probably received many calls from infected people, which likely annoyed him, explaining his harsh reaction when Carol contacted him. It’s possible Carol’s angry words during their last conversation finally made him realize she’s a survivor too, and that could lead him to reach out to her again in a future episode of Pluribus.
