Pluribus: Is Manousos Too Late To Save The World?

In the story Pluribus, Monousos seems to be the only person who agrees with Carol about the alien virus. In the seventh episode, “The Gap,” he starts searching for her, but Carol might have given up on fighting. Monousos received videos from Carol and, recalling their initial unfriendly phone conversation, believes she’s changed.

While Manousos faces a dangerous physical adventure, the main character in Pluribus, Carol, is navigating a difficult emotional journey. Both are determined that something is wrong with the world, but their strong belief in this could actually stop them from making things better.

Manousos’ Pride Might Stop Him From Saving The World

In “The Gap,” Manousos is set on finding Carol completely on his own, refusing any help from the community. Just as the community worried about Carol when she stubbornly dug Helen’s grave in the scorching sun while wearing a sweater, they now worry about Manousos, offering him assistance and urging him to let them drive him. But Manousos is resolute, and eventually ditches his car to continue his journey on foot, despite the risks.

Earlier in the series, Manousos appeared to avoid the hive due to fear or suspicion. However, in the episode “The Gap,” he explained his motives are based on his beliefs, not fear. He stated, “Nothing on this planet is yours. Nothing. You cannot give me anything because all that you have is stolen. You don’t belong here.”

While his stubbornness – even when it meant extreme hardship – is somewhat admirable, it’s also putting the project he’s dedicated to at risk.

Initially, his complete unwillingness to connect with the group kept him from discovering what Carol already knew. Without her videos, he wouldn’t have even realized saving the world was an option. He then had the chance to quickly fly to Carol, which would have been beneficial for both of them in the long run.

Honestly, it’s frustrating to watch him! He’s determined to go it alone on this incredibly risky journey, and it feels like he’s going to sabotage everything before he even gets going. The hive was right to warn him – it’s genuinely dangerous, and he’s clearly going to need their assistance, even if he’s too proud to ask. Meanwhile, I’m really worried about Carol; she’s losing her fighting spirit, and it’s happening quickly.

Will Manousos And Carol Ever Join Forces?

During Manousos’s journey, Carol is deeply affected by her isolation. Although she’s free to do as she pleases, no one – not the group, Diabaté, or any of the other people she’s encountered – wants to interact with her. The episode, “The Gap,” shows that after leaving Las Vegas, Carol spends a full 36 days completely alone.

Over time, Carol has become deeply despondent and has stopped trying to find a way forward. She engages in reckless and unusual behaviors – like eating out, hitting golf balls at buildings, and ultimately, sitting passively amidst fireworks, even when one nearly hits her. Despite having everything she needs materially, the absence of meaningful relationships has clearly affected her deeply.

Both she and Manounos are disturbed by the hive, feeling that forcing the connection was a mistake. However, in “The Gap,” being cut off from the hive proves too much for Carol. She begs them to reconnect, and breaks down in tears of relief when they do, finding comfort in Zosia’s embrace.

When Manousos reaches her, will the main character of Pluribus still be determined to “save the world?” Even if Manousos manages to regain her power, both of them will be considerably weaker – a consequence of their own stubbornness.
