The newest episode of Apple TV+’s Pluribus strongly recalls the humor and style of Jim Carrey’s classic comedy from 27 years ago.
Pluribus has quickly become Apple TV+’s most popular series and is widely considered one of the best new sci-fi shows of 2025. Even before the final episode airs, it’s clear the show is heading towards a major climax. Created by Vince Gilligan, Pluribus expertly builds suspense and keeps viewers hooked, and is predicted to become even more compelling as the story unfolds.
It’s surprisingly similar to a Jim Carrey comedy, and those parallels might hint at how things will play out for it.
Pluribus & The Truman Show Have A Lot In Common
After watching episode 8 of Pluribus, the show feels remarkably similar to The Truman Show. Like the character Truman, played by Jim Carrey, Carol appears to be the only genuine person in the series. She’s the only one who has inner thoughts and seems aware that everyone else is either controlled by a collective mind or unaware they’ve lost their independence.
Even though Pluribus is more imaginative, the infected people on the show, called “Others,” also see Carol as a celebrity, much like someone on a reality TV program.
In episode 8, the group surrounding Carol goes to great lengths, much like the people in the movie The Truman Show, to create a convincing normal life for her. They do this to trick her into thinking she’s exactly where she should be.
Like Truman, Carol also initially believes in the illusion, but quickly realizes it’s not real. Both Pluribus and The Truman Show make audiences wonder if a life of perfect happiness and comfort is worth giving up the ability to make your own choices.
At first, Carol and Truman both find it difficult to escape the fake world they’re trapped in, but they remain true to themselves and persistently resist those who try to dictate their lives and maintain control.

Just as Truman is about to settle for a comfortable but shallow life, Lauren appears and inspires him to break free. Likewise, the latest episode of Pluribus hints that Manousos will soon cross paths with Carol and push her to overcome her own growing sense of contentment.

The ending of The Truman Show feels more sad than happy for many viewers. Truman has always had everything done for him, so adjusting to the real world will likely be incredibly difficult. Plus, becoming instantly famous will probably be a huge burden for him.
He’ll soon realize that escaping didn’t lead to freedom, but simply exchanged one set of restrictions for another, equally overwhelming one.
Like Truman, Carol in Pluribus will probably struggle with whether it’s worth being as harsh as Manousos. She’ll likely question if achieving freedom justifies sacrificing her own values and becoming the very thing she’s fighting against.
