In the ’90s, not only did horror films experience a significant comeback, but it was also an epoch for teen-centric movies. Alongside horror classics such as Wes Craven’s Scream and Jim Gillespie’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, cinematic gems like Clueless and American Pie left indelible marks on the decade’s cinema landscape. However, one film stood out by seamlessly blending elements from both genres, and it remains among the top horror films of the ’90s – now available to stream for free.
August has rolled around, and as the pages of my life turn, so does Pluto TV’s streaming catalog. As a cinephile, I was thrilled to find gems like “The Craft,” directed by Andrew Fleming in 1996, now available on this Paramount-owned platform. Starring Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True, this teen supernatural horror film is a must-watch.
But that’s not all! August 1st also saw the arrival of other chilling titles, such as “Christine” (1983), “Let’s Scare Jessica To Death” (1971), and “My Bloody Valentine” (1981). With these additions, Pluto TV continues to offer a free, ad-supported service that keeps me entertained all month long.
Back in May 1996, I found myself utterly captivated by “The Craft” unfolding on the big screen. It was a unique blend of supernatural horror and witchcraft woven into an engaging tale of teenage life – all about anger, justice, and the complexities of navigating the female social hierarchy.
Following Sarah Bailey’s journey as she transfers to a Los Angeles high school and befriends a group of like-minded outcasts, this movie takes us on an intriguing adventure. As they delve into witchcraft, their pursuit of popularity and power becomes increasingly treacherous.
The movie titled “The Craft” turned out to be an unexpected success, earning $55.6 million globally despite a production budget of only $15 million. The film, which won an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight and received multiple other nominations, was generally met with a mix of praise and criticism from both critics and viewers, scoring 51% among critics and 65% among audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Over time, the movie developed a dedicated fanbase, often referred to as a cult following. More than two decades after its initial release, a sequel, “The Craft: Legacy,” was released in 2020; however, it didn’t manage to replicate the original’s popularity.
