The Pokémon franchise has become incredibly huge, growing far beyond its origins as a video game series. It now includes a massive amount of content – everything from TV shows and movies to fan-made creations – making it a sprawling and ever-expanding universe.

While it’s been available for a while, the fan-made game Pokémon Crystal Clear is getting attention again thanks to recent talk about an “open world Pokémon” game. It’s a good time to remember you can actually play it now!

I’m a big fan of the second generation of Pokémon, and I still think Pokémon Crystal is one of the best games in the series. Since it never got a proper remake like other enhanced versions, it’s a really great original Game Boy game to own, as long as you take care of the battery that saves your progress.

It’s easy to see why fans would want to remake this classic game, especially since it has one of the most memorable storylines in any Pokémon title. Many in the Pokémon community consider Crystal Clear to be a fantastic fan-made project, offering a completely open-world experience based on the original second-generation games.

Combining the Kanto and Johto regions (from the first and second generation games) remains one of the most brilliant ideas in any Pokémon game. However, Crystal Clear takes it a step further by letting you access both regions right away. Instead of being forced to play through Johto before reaching Kanto, you can now begin your adventure in almost any location.

You don’t need to worry about gym battles being too difficult – they adjust to your level, and even strong gym leaders can have powerful Pokémon like Zapdos. Plus, you can challenge the gyms in any order you like! It’s similar to the gym system in Scarlet and Violet, but improved, and gives you a good reason to play the game again.

So, I’ve been checking out Pokémon Crystal Clear, and you can download it from the official site – they’ll also point you to their Discord server, which is HUGE with over 80,000 members and a really active community. Just a heads-up though, it’s not a full game; it’s a patch, so you’ll need to have the original Pokémon Crystal game first to make it work.

ShockSlayer, one of the game’s creators, says building it with a team was a truly valuable experience, and they learned a great deal about game development along the way. They’re now starting work on a new project. If you’re searching for a new Pokémon-like game, this one is worth checking out.
