The live Pokémon Go Tour: Kalos event has officially begun! Events are happening in Los Angeles and Tainan from February 20th to 22nd. Trainers may have thought they knew what to expect, but Niantic had a surprise in store. After a great first day, Pokémon Go announced another new Mega Pokémon joining the Super Mega Raids. In addition to Mega Victreebel and Mega Malamar, Mega Dragonite is also now appearing during Go Tour Kalos.
This week, Pokémon Go announced a new, more difficult type of raid battle called Super Mega Raids, and introduced two new Mega Evolutions originally from Pokémon Legends: Z-A. These Super Mega Raids will first appear during the Pokémon Go Tour Kalos event this weekend, offering a bigger challenge for players. The new raids and Mega Evolutions will become available worldwide starting February 28th with Pokémon Go Tour Kalos – Global. Niantic also confirmed that Mega Dragonite, which they previously hinted at, will be available starting during the Go Tour Kalos event.
Mega Dragonite Joins Pokemon Go Super Mega Raid Lineup for Go Tour

It appears Pokemon Go is gearing up for a major year, celebrating its 10th anniversary. Before the Pokemon Go Tour Kalos event, Niantic announced a new, more challenging type of Mega Raid. Alongside these ‘Super Mega Raids,’ they confirmed that Mega Victreebel and Mega Malamar will appear for the first time during the Go Tour. These two Mega Evolutions were recently introduced in Pokemon Legends: Z-A and were highlighted even before the game’s release. However, the very first Mega Evolution confirmed for Legends: Z-A wasn’t initially included – until now.
Pokémon Go has announced that Mega Dragonite will be appearing alongside Mega Victreebel and Mega Malamar at the Kalos Go Tour. Excitingly, a Shiny Mega Dragonite will be available from the start! These three Mega Pokémon will debut in Super Mega Raids on February 21st and 22nd during the in-person Go Tour events. They’ll then become available worldwide for the first time during the Go Tour Kalos – Global event later this month. Here’s the Super Mega Raid schedule for those attending the in-person event:
- Saturday – Mega Victreebel and Mega Dragonite
- Sunday – Mega Malamar and Mega Dragonite
The Super Mega Raid event happening on February 28th and March 1st will probably follow the same format as previous events. These Raids will emphasize teamwork, as the Pokémon you battle will use shields that you’ll need to break. If you win, you’ll have a chance to catch the Raid Boss and earn a lot of Mega Energy, enough to power them up to the new Super Max level.
New Super Mega Raids, Explained

There’s been a lot of Pokemon news recently, and it can be tough to follow everything! If you haven’t heard about the new Super Mega Raids, here’s a breakdown of what you need to know.
Super Mega Raids are an even harder version of Mega Raids, first appearing during the Go Tour: Kalos events in Los Angeles and Tainan. They became available worldwide on February 28th and March 1st. These Raids require a minimum of 8 Trainers to battle extremely powerful Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Like other Pokémon Go features, you’ll need a new item called a Link Charge to participate. You can join Super Mega Raids in person using either a Link Charge or a Premium Battle Pass. If you’re joining remotely, you’ll need to use both a Link Charge and a Remote Raid Pass.
In Super Mega Raids, the powerful Raid Boss will occasionally protect itself with shields that lessen incoming damage. To defeat these shields, every Trainer needs to contribute – each person can only break one shield at a time. Once the shields appear, each Trainer’s Mega-Evolved Pokémon will automatically join the battle and receive a power increase to help overcome the Boss’s defenses.
Currently, the newly revealed Mega Pokémon from Pokémon Legends: Z-A are the only ones confirmed to appear in Super Mega Raids in Pokémon Go. We can expect more powerful bosses to be added in the future.
As a Pokémon Go player, I’m really curious about the upcoming changes to Mega Raids! I’d love to hear what everyone else thinks, so let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – come join the discussion!
