As a long-time *Pokémon Go* player, I was so excited to hear that Niantic was finally raising the level cap! For a while now, we’ve all been stuck at Level 50. They announced a few months ago that we’d be able to go all the way up to Level 80, but there’s a twist – they’re completely changing how leveling works. It’s not just about grinding XP anymore; they’re spreading out the requirements and tasks more evenly, from when you first start playing all the way up to Level 80. And now, they’ve finally shared all the details about how this new system will actually work, which is awesome!
Pokémon Go recently announced a major update to its leveling system, which will launch on October 15th. Niantic, the game’s developer, shared details about the new level cap, how player levels will be adjusted, and new rewards. They also introduced Daily Adventure Eggs. However, recent discoveries from data mining have revealed how much experience will be needed to level up, and players aren’t very happy about it.
Pokemon Go Level Grind Gets More Rewarding, But Not Necessarily More Fun
Let’s quickly review what’s officially known about the October 15th update to *Pokemon GO* and its changes to level requirements. The update will revamp the leveling system to give players rewards more often. A key benefit is increased storage space – something you previously had to pay for with Poke Coins. This is a significant improvement for players!
Niantic announced that player levels will be updated based on current XP, ensuring no one loses a level, but those at Level 23 or higher will likely gain at least one. Players reaching Level 25 will also unlock new avatar rewards every 5 levels, including outfits inspired by Poke Balls, a Pikachu hologram, and fresh hairstyles. Plus, starting October 15th, a new Daily Adventure Egg will be available, hatching after just 1 kilometer. This egg uses a separate incubator and doesn’t affect your regular egg storage, giving players a daily chance to catch a Pokémon.
Everything discussed so far seems positive. I, for one, always welcome more Eggs, even if it would be nice to be able to delete some during special events. However, recent data discovered within the game reveals changes to how leveling up works, and that’s causing some frustration among Pokémon Go players.
Level up requirements datamined

These details haven’t been officially confirmed, but they appear to come from information found within the game’s upcoming update. We’ll have a clearer picture of the exact requirements when the leveling changes go live on October 15th. However, early indications suggest some of the more disliked level-up tasks are returning. Previously required from levels 41 to 50, these tasks will now be active for levels 71 to 80, meaning players may need to repeat content they’ve already finished – and that isn’t always enjoyable.
Players are upset about the rumored new requirements for progression, especially because they bring back some of the most annoying tasks from before. These include winning 80 GO Battle League matches, getting 50 Lucky Pokémon through trades, defeating 100 Team Go Rocket Grunts, and defeating Team Go Rocket Leaders 30 times. While these are challenging goals, they’re still time-consuming. Getting Lucky Pokémon through trades is especially difficult because it depends on chance and requires players to meet up and trade in person.

Trainer levels will change as you gain experience, but it appears you’ll need to complete specific tasks to reach Level 80. Niantic hasn’t officially said if you’ll need to redo tasks you’ve already finished at lower levels, but their recent announcement implies you will. The update states you’ll need both experience points *and* new research tasks to level up. This means players who are already at Level 50 might have to complete these tasks again.
A big update to the leveling system in *Pokémon Go* is coming on October 15th. After the update, players will see their new level and can start completing special research tasks to continue leveling up. This will confirm whether recent information discovered by data miners is correct.
