Fans of digital pets, such as Pokémon, have long shared a connection with the iconic Tamagotchi. In truth, Tamagotchi served as the inspiration for Digimon, which was designed to appeal more to boys. It’s only natural to imagine a fusion between Pokémon and Tamagotchi. Previously, these brands even collaborated on a limited Pokémon x Tamagotchi lineup. Now, however, Pokémon is planning to release its own modernized take on the popular keychain digital pet idea.
In 2019, there was a temporary partnership between Pokemon and Tamagotchi, resulting in a special Eevee Tamagotchi edition with limited availability. Additionally, Pokemon introduced the Pokewalker, a pedometer-style device, along with the games Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. These early initiatives might have paved the way for their latest collaboration, the Pokemon Poke-nade Monster Ball. This upcoming toy from Japanese toy manufacturer Takara Tomy is scheduled to launch in October, offering both Japanese and English language options. However, one may wonder, what exactly is this new item?
Pokemon’s New Tamagotchi-Style Toy Is An Ambitious Upgrade on the Concept
The recently introduced Poke-nade gadget may seem a bit peculiar with its name, yet it carries a significant connotation. In Japanese, “Naderu” implies stroking or petting, and this new device is centered around the idea of interacting with your Pokemon in that manner. Hence, Poke-nade merges Pokemon and pet, making for an engaging title. Contrasting to a Tamagotchi, it appears less compact for travel. Instead, its design resembles a round plaything fashioned like a Poke Ball. It boasts a few straightforward buttons and also includes a small screen for observing your Pokemon, similar to a window.
In contrast to Tamagotchis, which had a single pet per device and were relatively basic, the Poke-nade offers a diverse array of Pokemon to engage with. In total, you can encounter and nurture 157 distinct Pokemon. Among these, only seven Partner Pokemon have full voiceovers and animations – Pikachu, Eevee, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly, Lucario, and Sylveon. The initial few are reasonable choices as they include the iconic mascots and the latest trio of starter Pokemon. Regarding Lucario and Sylveon, it seems these two were chosen due to their popularity among fans.
The Poke-nade provides multiple ways to interact with various Pokemon, each reacting uniquely. Besides petting your pocket creatures, you can also play games, nurture them, and participate in battles on the device. It’s unclear yet how they will manage this on a small screen using only three buttons, but it resembles a mix of Tamagotchi and Nintendogs. Honestly, I’m quite excited to see how it unfolds!
In numerous aspects, the Poke-nade appears similar to an upgrade of the Tamagotchi. However, its smaller size and unique shape may make it more convenient to transport. This might lead to a bit of leniency from our Pokemon when we occasionally forget to feed them. The launch date for the Poke-nade Monster Ball toy is scheduled for October 11th, with a price tag of approximately $51 USD.
