Just starting out in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*? You’re probably looking for ways to keep improving as you explore Lumiose City. While battling Pokemon is key, what you do *between* battles can really help you win the next fight.
Here are some helpful tips to make your new game experience more enjoyable and manageable. While you can play the game in many different ways, these suggestions will help you build a well-rounded character prepared for any challenge. They’ll focus on developing the skills needed to consistently improve your Pokémon and become a stronger battler.
With that out of the way, let’s dive in!
1. Strike From the Shadows
Trying to surprise wild Pokemon or other trainers before starting a battle is a smart move. Getting the first attack in gives you an immediate advantage, and it can help you win faster, potentially saving items like potions.
This is a fantastic way to catch Pokémon you find in the wild and quickly add them to your collection, as long as you use the appropriate Poké Ball.
2. Seek Out Pokemon Centers
Okay, so Pokemon Centers are seriously lifesavers. You *need* to hit them up whenever you can. Not only are they great for quickly getting around the map, but they’ve got helpful people inside. The Nurse will heal your Pokemon after a tough battle, which is awesome, and there’s someone who’ll give you back the Poke Balls you’ve used – super convenient! Plus, as you progress through the game, you can buy new types of Poke Balls there, and that’s a big part of how the game works – catching ’em all, you know?
Finding and activating as many of these as possible will save you time and effort later on. It’s a good idea to have one close by when you start gaining levels and facing tougher enemies!
3. Explore Rooftops For Valuable Loot
Finding and activating Holovators will open up access to the rooftops of Lumiose City, where you can discover a lot of rare and valuable items. While you can find things by searching the streets, the rooftops offer much better collectibles, so it’s worth going up whenever possible.
4. Don’t Neglect Side Quests
Side quests in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* are a fantastic way to get rare Pokemon you might not encounter while exploring, and they also reward you with useful items and currency. Most quests are quick to complete, making them a great choice if you want to strengthen your team without spending a lot of time searching for specific Pokemon.
5. Dealing With Obstacles
It’s a good idea to catch at least one Pokémon of each type. This helps you defeat a wider range of opponents and unlocks new areas to explore in Lumiose City. Discovering these new areas leads to new items and strategies, giving you a better gaming experience from the start of your adventure.
6. Use Your Recalls Wisely
You may have noticed some opponents give your Pokémon damaging status conditions that last for multiple turns. If you want to save items that can reduce or eliminate those effects, you can switch your Pokémon by using a Poké Ball during battle.
Okay, so switching out my Pokémon means they have a little cooldown before they can attack again, which can slow things down a bit. But honestly, it’s usually a fast way to get rid of those damage-over-time effects, like poison or burn. Just a heads-up though – some of those status conditions actually stop you from switching Pokémon out at all! That’s why I always keep a few items on hand, just in case I get stuck with something really bad.
7. Control Your Time
The Battle Zones in Lumiose City are only available at night, so it’s helpful to pay attention to the game’s time. Try to finish most of your tasks during the day, then switch to night mode when you’re ready to battle trainers and gain experience.
This helps you make the most of your time and prevents you from starting difficult battles when you’re already worn out from a day of catching and battling Pokémon.
8. Loot Everything!
Grab anything that isn’t fixed in place! Collecting items is a fantastic way to build up your inventory with useful things and valuables you might need later. Plus, having extra stuff means you can always sell it if you need to.
You can also discover rare items while exploring, which can really help you on your journey. That’s why we suggest having Pokémon in your team that can overcome different types of barriers – it allows you to access new areas sooner.
9. Mega Evolutions Win Fights
We highly recommend using Mega Evolutions to win battles effectively and keep your Pokémon healthy. Think of them as a powerful defensive move that punishes your opponent right before they attack. When you Mega Evolve, you avoid damage and immediately counter with a strong attack, taking full advantage of the momentary protection.
Knowing when to use these abilities can really turn the tide of a fight. The temporary boosts they give you might be what you need to defeat an enemy with one hit instead of two.
10. Research Missions Are Key to Gaining New Abilities
Try to finish Dr. Mable’s research quickly! She gives you useful TMs that let you teach your Pokémon new moves. The best part is, TMs aren’t used up – you can switch them between compatible Pokémon whenever you want.
Beating the doctor not only rewards you with great items, but also provides other useful loot, making her a good character to focus on. Also, remember to regularly teach your Pokémon new moves, as they won’t learn them automatically just by getting new TMs.
11. Socialize As Much As You Can
Don’t just explore Lumiose City – talk to the people who live there too! They often give you helpful items and rewards, so chatting with them as you explore is a great idea.
It could also lead to some interesting discoveries along the way!
12. Ensure Your Pokemon Actually Follow Orders
When catching and training stronger Pokémon, it’s important to reach certain level requirements. If you don’t, they might not follow your instructions during battles or exploration. To ensure your Pokémon are fully cooperative and perform their best, focus on completing research tasks and raising your trainer level.
13. Unlock Different Pokeball Types
Get different kinds of Pokeballs as soon as possible! You’ll need them to catch the rarer Pokemon you encounter. Keeping a variety of Pokeballs on hand means you’ll be prepared for any Pokemon you want to add to your team, without having to worry about running out of the right type.
14. Stack Challenge Cards in Battle Mode
The best way to get stronger is by battling other trainers at night. As you battle, you can collect challenge cards, and completing these cards gives you extra rewards after each fight. A helpful trick is to grab multiple cards with similar goals and complete them all at once – this maximizes your rewards and saves you time.
15. Pick Your Battles
When you’re in a Battle Zone, it’s smart to practice on easier enemies to fill up your Mega gauge and test out different team setups before attempting a Promotion Match.
If you take the time to prepare for battles, you’ll significantly increase your chances of getting promoted and doing it well. You’ll start with a strong team of Pokémon and a fully charged Mega gauge, which helps minimize the impact of random chance and gives you a better shot at winning difficult battles the first time around.
During battles, you can pause and open the menu to use items from your satchel. Just keep in mind there’s a short wait before you can access it again, so choose the right time to do so.
That’s all the advice we have to help you enjoy Lumiose City! Feel free to share any of your own tips in the comments below so other players can have fun too.
