Pokemon Legends: Z-A DLC Update Adds More New Megas Than Expected (& Here’s How to Get Started)

It was announced before the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A that the game would have downloadable content (DLC). The DLC, Mega Dimension, was actually made available for purchase before the main game launched, which some fans didn’t like. Now, the story content for Mega Dimension is finally here in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. This new content is part of a free update that also includes fixes for all players, whether they bought the DLC or not.

The “Mega Dimension” downloadable content for Pokemon Legends: Z-A was released on December 9th for both the Switch and Switch 2. While the main purpose of the update is to add the new DLC, it also includes fixes for a number of unspecified issues. Even if you haven’t bought the DLC yet, you should now be able to encounter the new Pokemon through features like trading and Mystery Gifts. Many players, including myself, are surprised by the sheer number of new Mega Evolutions added to Pokemon Legends: Z-A with this update.

What’s New with the Mega Dimension DLC in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Before you start the new content, please ensure your game is updated to the latest version. It should update automatically if your Nintendo Switch is connected to the internet. You can verify the version number (it should say Ver. 2.0.0) in the game’s software information from the Home menu. After updating, you’ll be able to experience the new Mega Dimension story and Megas, provided you have purchased the downloadable content (DLC).

Many players are curious about how many new Mega Evolutions are in the Mega Dimension DLC. According to Serebii, who quickly explored the new content, there are 19 new Mega Evolutions to discover as you progress through the story. This includes previously revealed forms, as well as some unexpected additions. While only a few are new Z-Moves, there’s a chance more could be added later. I won’t list all the new Mega Evolutions just yet, as the DLC is brand new and some players might prefer to discover them on their own.

Okay, so this new DLC for Pokemon Legends: Z-A isn’t just about collecting a bunch of new Mega Pokemon, or at least, I really hope it isn’t! If you’re like me and want to jump straight into the new story, here’s what you need to do. First, you absolutely have to finish the main game, all the way through the credits. Once you’ve done that, and you’ve bought and downloaded the DLC, the game will actually message you when you start up, telling you to head up to the rooftop of Hotel Z to get things going. Pretty straightforward!

So, doing this little bit actually introduces you to a brand new character in the DLC and kicks off their first side quest! Honestly, we don’t know exactly how long the DLC will take to beat yet – it just came out and I’m still exploring everything. But judging by how many new Megas they added, I’m guessing it’ll take at least a few hours to get through the story and, of course, catch all those new Pokemon and grab their Mega Stones!

You can now play Pokemon Legends: Z-A on Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2. The Mega Dimension downloadable content costs $29.99 and includes new character outfits (holowear) and story chapters that were released on December 10th.
