It seems like Pokemon Legends: Z-A just came out, but the third season of its Ranked Battles is already starting! The new season begins on November 26th and lasts until December 17th. The Pokemon Company has also announced some updates to how these competitive battles will work.
Ranked Battles are back! Players will start at Rank Z and battle to reach Rank A. Like before, earning Mega Stones for the original Pokémon X and Y starters requires climbing the ranks. While the core Ranked Battle experience remains familiar, Season 3 introduces a big change: Zygarde, the game’s central Legendary Pokémon, is now eligible for use. Many players believe this addition will significantly impact the competitive scene.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Removes Zygarde Restriction for Season 3 of Ranked Battles

Here’s some exciting news about the upcoming Ranked Battles for Season 3! This time, you’ll be able to earn Mega Stones for all three starter Pokémon from Pokémon X and Y. While the available Mega Stones were limited before, we’re adding Chesnaughtite for Season 3, meaning dedicated players can potentially collect all three. Here’s a look at the ranks needed to earn them:
- Chesnaughtite – Rank S
- Delphoxite – Rank V
- Greninjite – Rank Y
Still need Mega Stones in Pokemon Legends: Z-A? You’ll have to reach Rank S to collect all three. Season 3 offers these as rewards, along with useful items like Nuggets, Mastery Seeds, and Bottle Caps as you climb the ranks.
That’s great news, but climbing the ranks in competitive battles just became more challenging. Season 3 introduces Zygarde, a previously unavailable Legendary Pokémon, into the mix. Players can now build teams with Zygarde, alongside powerful Pokémon like Xerneas and Yveltal, creating some very tough opponents. While Zygarde fans are happy about its inclusion in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, many players worry it will significantly change and potentially disrupt the current competitive landscape.

Since Pokemon Legends: Z-A came out recently in October, players are surprised that all three of its Legendary Pokemon are already available for player-versus-player (PvP) battles. The addition of Xerneas last season led many to feel the game’s competitive scene became less engaging. With more Legendary and Mythical Pokemon planned to be added in the Mega Dimension downloadable content, players are worried about how future Ranked Battles will play out.
It’s possible the list of allowed Pokémon will change when the downloadable content is released. We don’t yet know if new Legendary and Mythical Pokémon will be added, or if any currently allowed ones will be removed. Either way, players have under a month to battle Zygarde and other Pokémon if they want to collect all three Mega Stones for the Kalos starter Pokémon.
