The new game, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, is making a significant change to the *Pokemon* series – something fans have been requesting from Game Freak and Nintendo for years. *Pokemon* has been popular since 1996, and over 120 games have been released, including 38 main series titles. Despite all these releases and opportunities to evolve, the core gameplay hasn’t changed much. 2022’s *Pokemon Legends: Arceus* was the biggest departure from the traditional formula so far, and *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* appears to be building on that innovation.
The update includes a variety of improvements, from major gameplay adjustments to smaller details, such as customizable clothing. For years, Pokémon fans have asked to be able to dress their characters without gender limitations, and now they can! While this might seem minor, it’s a welcome change many players have been requesting for a long time, and it was starting to feel like it would never happen.
“This Is a Very Good Thing”
We recently had a chance to play *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* and noticed a surprising change that Game Freak hadn’t announced. Although it’s a small detail among all the new information about the game for Switch and Switch 2, it’s generated a lot of excitement. Many *Pokemon* fans are thrilled about this new feature, and posts about it on X have already gotten over a million views.
One Pokémon fan expressed optimism, saying, “This is great news, but I hope it doesn’t limit our choices.” Another fan enthusiastically agreed, simply writing, “Yes!”
Another fan explained they wished they could have more freedom with their character’s clothing. They specifically mentioned wanting the jacket typically given to male characters in the Kalos region, instead of the dress usually assigned to female characters. They felt restricted by these gender-based clothing options.
This addition doesn’t actually change how good the game is overall. It doesn’t make *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* better or worse as a game, but it does enhance the experience for some players, and that can make a big difference. It’s good to see Game Freak finally add this feature, as it’s becoming more common in RPGs. As usual, *Pokemon* tends to adopt new trends a little later than other games.
