Before the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, a lot of the marketing focused on new Mega Evolutions, which made me worry the game’s story might not be very strong. Luckily, that wasn’t true – most players enjoyed the story and overall feel of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, even if some weren’t completely thrilled. The game did leave a few things unanswered, and many players hoped the upcoming Mega Dimension DLC would provide those answers. Now, with the marketing for the DLC again highlighting new Mega Evolutions, I’m concerned about how much new story content will actually be included.
It hasn’t been long since Legends: Z-A came out, but a lot of players have already finished the main story – it takes about 25 to 30 hours to complete without doing all the optional quests. While there’s still plenty to do after the credits roll, fans are hoping the Mega Dimension DLC will add even more content. Right now, though, most of the news about the DLC focuses on catching new Megas, and honestly, that’s not what I’m most excited about.
Pokemon DLC Have a Spotty History

Adding downloadable content (DLC) after a Pokémon game releases is a fairly recent development for the series. It started with Pokémon Sword and Shield, which included the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra expansions. While fans generally enjoyed these first DLC packs, some felt they were a little expensive for what they offered. They introduced new stories and Pokémon, establishing a model for future post-launch content. Then came Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.
I’m a longtime Pokémon fan, so I generally enjoy the games even if they aren’t perfect. I actually liked the main part of Scarlet & Violet more than a lot of other players. I thought the supporting characters were well-done, and it was refreshing to experience a slightly different gameplay style. However, the main story had some significant plot holes.
The downloadable content for Pokémon Scarlet & Violet mainly added new locations and more Pokémon to collect. While these additions had their own stories, they felt more focused on introducing new characters and creatures than on resolving the plot threads from the original game. Even after finishing everything – the main game, both DLC expansions, and the prologue – many questions remain unanswered, like the true purpose of Professor Blair and the mystery surrounding Terapagos. It seems we’ll never get those answers, and that worries me that Mega Dimension might repeat the same pattern as previous Pokémon DLC.
Mega Dimension Risks Style Over Substance With New Megas & Not Much Else

Several trailers have been released for Mega Dimension before its December 10th launch. However, most of them have focused on players discovering new Mega Pokémon. While we’ve briefly seen new characters like Donut Chef Ansha and Korrina, it appears they’ll primarily help players travel to a different Lumiose City to catch and battle more Pokémon.
Hyperspace Lumiose is a distorted version of the original Lumiose City, and it features different Pokémon. While it’s not yet clear exactly what we’ll be doing there, we know at least four new Mega Evolutions will be available, as previously announced. My concern is that this area might not have much to offer beyond those Mega Evolutions.
We’re still curious about what the future holds for Lumiose City and its people. Specifically, we’d like to know what happened to Taunie/Urbain’s mother. When we first heard about the Mega Dimension DLC, we hoped it would provide some answers. However, as more content focuses on Mega Evolution, it feels like the DLC might just be a way to encourage fans to collect more Pokémon without adding much to the story.
I’m hoping my worries are unnecessary and all the attention on Mega Evolutions is just to keep the story a surprise. However, since this DLC focuses on story content, it’s strange to see so much emphasis on new Mega forms instead of hints about the narrative. We’ll know for sure when the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokemon Legends: Z-A releases on December 10th.
