Pokémon Legends Z-A is the next big step for the popular Pokémon games. Although rumors point to a new generation of Pokémon coming soon, we’re thrilled to be exploring Lumiose City in this installment.
This game offers a fresh experience, but it’s not a completely new series. That means you can choose from familiar starter Pokémon – Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile – from previous games.
Which one should you pick? We’re so glad you asked – here’s the lowdown on each.
Who are the Pokémon Legends Z-A starters?
The Pokémon Legends Z-A starters are Chikorita, Tepig and Totodile.
As is tradition, these three starters fall into Grass, Fire and Water types.
Chikorita is a Grass-type Pokémon, Tepig is a Fire-type, and Totodile is a Water-type – pretty straightforward, right?
So, which one should you choose? Keep on reading and we’ll share our pick!
Which Pokémon should you pick as your starter?
You probably have a favorite type of starter Pokémon – like Fire, Grass, or Water – but since these are all returning Pokémon, you can also choose based on what you remember and love from past games.
I’m choosing Totodile! He was my first Pokémon in the Johto region way back in 1999 – I’m definitely showing my age! But it’s also worth thinking about how each Pokémon evolves before you decide.
You might not think much of Chikorita at first, but its final evolution, Meganium, becomes a powerful Pokémon later in the game.
Here’s a closer look at each of the starter Pokémon for Pokémon Legends Z-A to help you choose!
Chikorita
- Type: Grass
- Weakness: Fire, Ice, Poison, Bug, Flying
- Super Effective Against: Water, Rock, Ground
- First Appearance: Gen 2 (Gold and Silver)
Chikorita is a cute Pokémon originally from the Johto region and one of the first you can choose at the beginning of your new journey.
Okay, so I’ve been battling with this little Pokémon – the one that evolves into Bayleef and then Meganium – and it’s usually pretty chill. But don’t let that fool you, it can really hit hard with its Grass attacks! The biggest problem I’ve found, though, is using it against Fire-types like Tepig. It just doesn’t stand a chance!
Tepig
- Type: Fire
- Weakness: Water, Rock, Ground
- Super Effective Against: Grass, Bug, Ice, Steel
- First Appearance: Gen 5 (Black and White 2)
Tepig debuted in the fifth generation of Pokémon as a cute and friendly creature. It eventually evolves into Pignite, and finally into the powerful Emboar.
It’s a solid starter, but you’ll struggle against Water types as you can probably imagine.
Totodile
- Type: Water
- Weakness: Grass, Electric
- Super Effective Against: Fire, Rock, Ground
- First Appearance: Gen 2 (Gold and Silver)
Another Johto starter back for a second run, Totodile is the cutest crocodile you’ve ever seen.
Totodile evolves into Croconaw, and then finally into Feraligatr. Although it’s weak against Grass-type attacks, it’s most vulnerable to Electric-type moves.
