When Pokemon Pokopia was first announced, everyone thought it would be like Animal Crossing, but with Pokemon. Now, Animal Crossing is great, but its maps aren’t exactly huge. Even after seeing some gameplay, I figured Pokopia‘s world wouldn’t be that big – just a nice little island for Ditto and all the Pokemon. But honestly, when I actually started playing, I was shocked at how massive it is! And for the most part, that’s a really good thing.
The areas in Pokopia, like the Withering Wastelands, might appear small at first, but they’re surprisingly detailed and expansive. Plus, the game features gates that lead to completely new worlds to discover. It quickly became clear that Pokopia isn’t a short game – in fact, the sheer size of the world and everything you can do is almost overwhelming. After playing for over 40 hours, I’m really happy the game is so massive, and I don’t want it to end anytime soon.
Pokopia‘s Map Size & Poke Dex Are No Joke

When I reach a natural stopping point in Pokopia, I always want to take some time to explore the area I’m in. But it’s rarely straightforward! The game cleverly uses space, making each location feel larger than it actually is on the map. Similar to using Dig to access the Underground or Dive to explore underwater, Pokopia allows for exploration on multiple levels. You can even swim or fly to the edge of the map and discover completely new caves or mountains.
Compared to the vast but empty world of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, this game’s map feels full of life and things to do. Each area is packed with items, hidden secrets, and Pokemon to find. The game boasts a large Pokedex with over 300 Pokemon to collect. Building habitats for them will take time, and you won’t find every Pokemon immediately. Plus, with live events already planned to add even more Pokemon, this game has the potential to stay popular and be updated for a long time, much like Animal Crossing.
One of the most interesting things about Pokopia is how it handles Pokémon evolution. Instead of Pokémon naturally evolving over time, you unlock new areas to attract each stage of their evolutionary line. This, combined with the game’s large environments, significantly expands the gameplay. After starting my journey in the Withering Wastelands, I quickly realized the developer’s estimate of a 30-hour main story seemed way off. Spending so much time customizing habitats for each Pokémon makes that timeframe feel more like a speedrun goal.
Even After 40+ Hours, It Feels Like I’ve Just Scratched the Surface of Pokopia

I got to play Pokopia early as part of a review, and honestly, I’m totally hooked. I’ve already put over 40 hours into it, and there’s still so much to do! I’m constantly finding new artifacts, secrets, and Pokemon to collect. I could definitely use some upgrades to my environment levels, but honestly, I’m just now getting into the multiplayer, so that’s exciting! It’s been ages since a game kept me playing for this long, and I still can’t wait to jump back in. Pokopia has just built this world that I really want to fully explore, every little corner of it.
In addition to the main game world, Pokopia offers plenty of multiplayer activities. You can invite friends to Palette Town, a sandbox island with unique Poke Pals not found anywhere else. The island is massive, giving you tons of room to build a perfect home for your Eeveelutions. And if you want even more space, you can create entirely new worlds using the Cloud Islands feature.
I predict I’ll spend as much time playing Pokopia as I have with games like Skyrim. It’s packed with unexpected discoveries, from references to established lore to brand new historical items. I’m genuinely surprised by how expansive and detailed Pokopia is. Right now, I need to go search the Withered Wasteland for a hidden Misty costume I somehow missed!
