We’re celebrating 30 years of Pokémon, and there’s already a lot happening before the official Pokémon Day broadcast! Fans are especially excited about the chance to play with as many different Pokémon as they can.
People on Reddit are really enjoying Pokémon Rebirth, and many are saying it’s one of the most visually impressive Pokémon games available.
Pokémon Rebirth Is Absolutely Beautiful
The Backgrounds Are Fantastic
Taking place six years after the stories of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Pokémon Rebirth offers a new adventure with four gyms, optional quests, and a plot revolving around the Gigantamax Pokémon. The first significant English translation was released six months ago, but the game has been popular internationally for quite some time.
People are excited about this new feature, and many are praising the addition of backgrounds during battles. One player commented that even a small change like this can dramatically improve a game’s appearance: “Adding actual backgrounds to battles is such a small change that makes games look so much better.” However, another fan, who is a Pokémon rom hacker, explained that implementing backgrounds isn’t as simple as it seems. They noted the technical challenges, especially limitations with color palettes, stating, “I am a Pokémon rom hacker. At least for rom hacks (not fan games like this one), it is really hard to make interesting battle backgrounds and insert them in the game! Especially with the limitations in palettes etc. But agree with you, it is always good to see actual backgrounds there!”
The game’s appealing visuals have inspired some fans to try creating their own adventures. One new player shared, “I recently started playing Pokémon for the first time with LeafGreen and I’m really enjoying it! I’m curious about how difficult it is to modify the games. Would I need to learn assembly language, or are there simpler tools available? Also, what projects are you currently working on?”
Another fan responded, saying it’s not too difficult and you don’t need to learn assembly language. They recommended looking at the Pokémon Emerald expansion project and the Team Aqua asset repository on GitHub, explaining that they use C and that many contributors have created helpful resources to make decompiling and rom hacking easier.

The 30th Anniversary Is In Full Swing
I’m so excited about this new fan-made Pokémon game, Rebirth! Like a lot of these projects, it’s totally free to download. It started out being made in RPG Maker, but the creator moved it over to JoiPlay, which is awesome. You can grab it right now on the official site – seriously, go check it out!
Pokémon is having a great year, with dedicated fans and exciting new announcements on the horizon, including the reveal of the anticipated Generation 10.
