With physical Pokémon trading card boosters still difficult to find, many fans are now collecting virtually using Pokémon TCG Pocket. Despite new products quickly selling out, collectors remain enthusiastic about what’s coming next. As the release of the Phantasmal Flames expansion approaches, The Pokémon Company has announced three free promo cards that will be available alongside it. However, these cards will be challenging to find – and not just due to the typical scarcity of Pokémon cards.
As a Pokémon TCG fan, I was really excited to see the new retailer promo cards for the upcoming Phantasmal Flames set! This set is the second in the Mega Evolution line, following the first one that came out in late September – and that one sold out super fast, as usual. It’s awesome that they’re bringing Mega Evolution back to the cards alongside its return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It looks like Phantasmal Flames is going to be huge, with these free promo cards promising another quick sell-out at launch!
Pokemon Fans Will Have to Buy Cards in 3 Separate Stores to Get New Promo Cards

It’s become increasingly common to see empty spaces on store shelves where Pokémon cards should be. Demand is still much higher than the available supply, and even being at the store right when they get new stock doesn’t guarantee you’ll find any packs. This makes the requirements for the new, free Pokémon Trading Card Game promo cards seem a bit demanding. There are three different promo cards, each featuring a different Legendary Pokémon, and each will be available only at a specific store. The promo cards are:
- Suicune (GameStop and EB Games)
- Reshiram (Hot Topic and Barnes & Noble)
- Genesect (Best Buy and JB Hi-Fi)
The promotional cards include the Mega Evolution – Phantasmal Flames logo, and Suicune cards will also feature either a GameStop or EB Games logo. While these are free with purchase, you’ll need to spend at least $15 on Pokemon Trading Card Game products to receive them.
The real problem is finding a store that actually has Pokémon Trading Card Game products available. Getting three different items is going to be extremely hard, if not impossible. Unless you can be in multiple places simultaneously, Barnes & Noble will likely sell out of its new ‘Phantasmal Flames’ products before you even finish shopping at GameStop, and the same will happen at other stores.

If you’re lucky enough to find Phantasmal Flames available on November 14th, it shouldn’t be difficult to spend $15. The new set will include a Booster Display Box, Elite Trainer Box, Build & Battle Box, and a Booster Bundle, with prices ranging from $26 to $50. However, many retailers, like GameStop, are currently selling Pokemon TCG products above the suggested retail price, so even a small purchase of booster packs will quickly add up to $15 – assuming you can find anything in stock.
These special promo cards are meant to be a fun way to celebrate new releases of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. However, because of problems with reselling and limited quantities, it’s going to be difficult for most fans to actually get them. They’ll be available at certain stores starting November 14th, but based on past releases, they probably won’t stay in stock for long.
