Pokemon TCG Black Bolt & White Flare Are a Dream, But Only For Unova Fans

Collecting special Pokemon TCG sets can be quite a challenge for players due to the scarcity of booster boxes. This scarcity makes it difficult to obtain individual packs, forcing players to seek out packs in other collections and ETBs (Elite Trainer Boxes). The upcoming Black Bolt & White Flare expansion will bring all these difficulties, along with a few extra challenges. Yet, for fans of Unova, it promises to be an abundant source of valuable collectibles.

Instead of the common pair, Black Bolt and White Flare, differ significantly from the Paldean Fates or Prismatic Evolutions. Unlike these duos who share a collective pool of special cards, each individual in the set of Black Bolt and White Flare possesses a distinct collection of unique cards. This translates to players pursuing close to 400 separate cards for their gameplay.

In spite of any challenges that may have arisen during the evaluation process, the dual-card-list expansion delivers some of the most visually appealing Rare Illustrations of Unova Pokemon yet, particularly featuring beloved characters such as N in breathtaking full art cards. This collection is truly a dream come true for fans of Black & White, even with the obstacles faced during set review.

Limited Collections With High Price Tags

One key aspect to note about Black Bolt & White Flare is their price. Since booster packs can only be acquired through collections, bundles, blister packs, mini tins, and Expansion Ticket Boxes (ETBs), the cost of the entire set will accumulate rapidly. Moreover, enthusiasts will have to purchase multiple copies of each item if they wish to draw from both card sets, as Booster Bundles and ETBs will be “version-specific”.

In this review, The Pokemon Company generously supplied ComicBook with a Black Bolt Expansion Set Booster Box (ETB), a Flare White Booster Bundle, a Binder Collection, a Poster Collection, an individual Mini Tin, a Tech Sticker blister pack, the promotional starter blister pack, and the Large Card Victini Collector’s set. This generous assortment offered us ample booster packs to sample from across each collection.

Just as Prismatic Evolutions have their cost balanced by the superiority of each choice, the Binder Collection provides a luxurious card storage solution with its high-end binder cover and reinforced card sleeves. The Poster Collection showcases a large, vibrant artwork for your wall, while the Victini Large Card Collection presents the small Mythical in a colorful holographic foil reminiscent of a compact book.

As a devoted fan, I must confess it’s quite disheartening to learn that collecting one of each item from the latest Scarlet & Violet series might require a substantial financial investment, potentially amounting to hundreds of dollars. The scarcity of cards is causing this issue, making it challenging to find them at their recommended retail price. This shortage seems to be setting the stage for one of the most costly collections in the Scarlet & Violet era.

Pull Rates Are Not Nice in Black Bolt & White Flare

The sets of cards for Black Bolt and White Flare contain an impressive variety of stunning cards to choose from. Approximately 86 out of the total 172 cards are standard editions, while the remaining cards are either Illustration Rares, full arts, or Hyper Rares. Each booster pack includes a minimum of three slots that may contain anything from a reverse holofoil card to a special rare card.

It’s disappointing that although there’s an extensive collection of rare illustrations, the pull rates for Black Bolt and White Flare aren’t impressive. This might be challenging for collectors because the cost of purchasing the booster packs could be a barrier for some.

One issue arising from this enlargement is that it incorporates the uncommon Poke Ball and Master Ball cards from Prismatic Evolution. These cards could potentially land in the reverse holographic slot, thereby occupying a spot that would otherwise be reserved for a regular illustration-rare card.

These cards seem intriguing, yet they appear as excess or unnecessary additions to an already fast-moving collection. This is particularly noticeable when players are aiming for the Black White Rare, the unique class variant that has now replaced the traditional Gold Hyper Rare found in past sets.

Drawing cards from Black Bolt and White Flare can be quite challenging, as the limited number of unique cards often leads to a surplus of duplicates. If these starting packs don’t appeal strongly to Unova enthusiasts, they might find the experience disappointing rather swiftly.

Are Black Bolt & White Flare Worth It?

Regarding the Pokemon Trading Card Game expansions, Black Bolt and White Flare stand out with their unique focus. These collections will undoubtedly appeal to enthusiasts of the Unova region, but casual collectors who are mainly interested in a particular character or Pokemon might want to hold off and grab singles on TCGPlayer when they become available instead.

For enthusiasts hailing from Unova, this collection is a fantastic opportunity to delve deep into the lore. The games Black & White, following their release, didn’t get much attention compared to Kanto, Alola, or other more contemporary generations. As a result, beloved characters like N have had limited appearances in recent times.

Although the collection rates and cost for the Pokemon TCG Black Bolt and White Flare expansion might not be favorable for collectors, it’s unlikely that another set concentrating on a single generation will appear soon. This set is undoubtedly valuable to those who take pleasure in this specific phase of the franchise.
