Over time, McDonald’s has frequently teamed up with Pokemon for Happy Meal promotions, the most recent one being just a few months ago. Typically, these collaborations include existing cards that have minor modifications such as a unique logo or new numbering. But starting next month, a fresh Pokemon Trading Card Game promotion will be rolled out at McDonald’s restaurants, and this time it will offer a unique card that can only be obtained from the chain. Fittingly, the exclusive card portrays Pikachu sitting at a table while stretching for a burger, and there’s a McDonald’s logo on the right side of the image.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m pumped about the upcoming addition to my Pokémon TCG collection! Starting from August 1st, with the release of the new Mega TCG sets, you’ll find some exciting cards in McDonald’s Happy Meals. Besides the fresh Pikachu card, they’ll also be offering cards with the iconic McDonald’s logo on them, such as Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly, Ralts, and Riolu. It looks like these specific picks are to create a buzz around Mega Gardevoir and Mega Lucario, which will take center stage in this new set. If you’re in Japan from August 9th onwards, keep an eye out for these cards – so far, it’s only been confirmed for Japan. Stay tuned for more details!
It’s plausible that we might witness a similar promotion for North America around the same time as the Mega Evolution sets, set to release on September 26th locally. The Mega Evolution feature has been absent from the Trading Card Game for quite some time, but it’s coming back in 2025 to align with the launch of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. This upcoming Pokemon game is slated for release on October 16th and will be playable on both the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch. The game takes place in Lumiose City, a significant location from Pokemon X and Y, where Mega Evolution was first introduced to the series.
If U.S. McDonald’s served Pokemon Trading Card Game Happy Meals in 2025, it seems we may need to wait until next year for another round. Since the Japanese set is smaller, adjustments might be necessary by McDonald’s and The Pokemon Company. However, let’s hope that the Pikachu promo card won’t remain a regional exclusive. Given that 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise, next year seems particularly fitting for this collaboration. In other words, we can anticipate various promotions to celebrate this milestone.
While The Pokemon Company has been secretive about future projects past the year 2025, there’s a strong possibility that they may unveil something related to their 30th anniversary during the upcoming Pokemon Presents event on July 22nd. This broadcast is primarily expected to highlight Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but fans might catch a glimpse of the 30th anniversary logo and get some early peeks into what’s in store for the future.
